About this deal

I read this at school with the whole class, and I'm sorry, but it was so boring and I nearly fell asleep!

One day, Furo, one of the servants, blindfolds her and takes her on a mysterious boat ride to a secret lagoon, where she meets Finn, the boy from the canoe.Anne Fine, British Children's Laureate (2001-3) and one of three former winners on the Guardian panel, wrote that "we all fell on Eva Ibbotson's perfectly judged, brilliantly light to read, civilised Journey To The River Sea, in which we are shown how, as one of the characters Miss Minton reminds us, 'Children must lead big lives.

The passion for the setting is palpable through Maia's and Finn's love for the place, the writing is bringing to life all the brightly colored macaws, enormous butterflies and dangerous caimans. He later had a son, Finn Taverner, and lived in Manaus with plenty of friends, such as the Indians, Professor Glastonbury and many more people. It felt, as I said, as if it had been a book I'd read in my childhood but was even more wonderful reading it at my ( well into my fifties! Of course, novels don’t have to be life like, but if you are purporting to be creating a realistic depiction of life in a particular area and era, then I feel there has to be a greater sense of credibility and ultimately, I could not fully believe in the story or the characters. Identifying and critiquing harmful content is particularly important when the target audience is children.I want to watch Clovis on stage at the Manaus Opera House, fan in hand against the stifling, muggy atmosphere. I've been thinking a lot about how children's fiction can play a role in the moral development of a child. Fortunately, Maia has a very sympathetic, if somewhat mysterious governess who accompanies her to Brazil and in her adventures. Maia’s promise to Clovis to meet him motivates her to defy their wishes, so she sneaks out to go to the theater anyway. Despite being written in 2001, the story felt rather dated and twee more like something that would have been created about forty years earlier and I am not sure it will appeal to a modern young audience.

With a lot of planning and a surprise assist from Miss Minton, they manage to trick the twins into revealing “Finn’s” (really Clovis’s) hiding place to the investigators, who give the twins substantial reward money for their tipoff and triumphantly bring Clovis back to England, believing him to be the Westwood heir. Thus, the (young and old) readers are taken into the jungle, on one of Her Majesty's ships as well as little river boats, to encounter all manner of strange and splendid fauna and flora. a stack of sandwiches, a tall cold glass of lemonade ;topped at regular intervals…a wooden Easy-Chair ( the kind your grandpa sat on and smiled genially from) placed in a small, airy room that has a single antiquated table-fan whirring noisily…and a wide window from where you can hear the gentle crackle of crickets.Clovis tries to reveal his identity on several occasions—one of which results in disaster he can "have Maia when she's grown up. This book is quick to address and confront the issues of racism and colonialism in the early 20th century. Sir Aubrey sent the crows to find Finn as he needed the son of Bernard Taverner to inherit Westwood.
