About this deal

Jester J.V., Rife L., Nii D., Luttrull J.K., Wilson L., Smith R.E. In vivo biomicroscopy and photography of meibomian glands in a rabbit model of meibomian gland dysfunction. Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. 1982;22:660–667. The Blepha EyeBag (Formally MDG Rx Eyebag ®) is a patented, CE marked Class 1 medical device registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The EyeBag® can be used as a treatment for sore gritty eyes, dry eye syndrome, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, Chalazion treatment, Stye treatment and Blepharitis treatment. Calling the acquisition “an exciting addition to the Théa portfolio,” Philip Lewis Williams, managing director of Théa UK, commented: “We have worked closely with Professor James for a number of years, starting with the development of the Théa Dry Eye Project.”

Eyelid warming therapy is considered the mainstay of treating meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). 1 A variety of devices have been developed and shown to be efficacious in the treatment of MGD, but many are not commercially available. 2–6 More recent studies focus on in-office treatment procedures, and have found long-term improvements in MGD, 7–10 but these may be reserved for severe cases or those unresponsive to conventional procedures. VTP improved the number of functional MGs and symptoms and was as effective as lid hygiene practised twice daily for 3months The EyeGiene ® Insta-Warmth System™ (Eyedetec Medical, USA) works by placing the Warming Wafers inside the mask, without heating them in the microwave. It produces heat from a chemical reaction in each wafer. Some studies compared this device with the MGDRx EyeBag ®. Wang et al. [ 25] (I) showed that clinical signs improved after the application of both therapies. Both treatments transferred their peak temperatures to the eyelids in 3 min, although they were slightly lower in the EyeGiene ® than in the EyeBag ®. Furthermore, Wang et al. [ 26] (III) found that the warming effect of the EyeBag ® was more prolonged. Therefore, the EyeBag ® would be more effective for severe cases of MGD. Warming and Humidity Devices eyes of 20 healthy subjects (34.9±6.8years) and 36 eyes of 36 patients with dry eye (30.4±5.7years)James, managing director of The EyeBag Co, commented: “We are taking this new and exciting direction with Théa which will be good for our customers, our people, and the eye care sector.”

Ophthalmologists recommend warming the eye as the first step of an eyelid cleansing routine in cases of MGD, blepharitis and the related conditions such as dry eye, chalazion and stye. Square G. Zhao Y, Xie J, Li J, et al. Evaluation of monocular treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction with an automated thermodynamic system in elderly chinese patients: a contralateral eye study. J Ophthalmol. 2016;27:1–8. Bilkhu et al. [ 17] (level of evidence: II) observed that 5 min of the MGDRx EyeBag ® application twice a day for 2 weeks was an effective and safe treatment for MGD. Moreover, the benefits could last for 6 months when subjects continued the therapy occasionally. Murphy et al. [ 18] (I) showed that increasing the treatment time to 10 min seemed to be equally effective. However, Ngo et al. [ 19] (I) found no significant changes in clinical signs after 1 month using the MGDRx EyeBag ® twice a day for 10 min. The MGDRx EyeBag is a simple device for heating the eyelids, resulting in increased NITBUT and TFLLT in subjects without meibomian gland dysfunction that seem to be clinically significant. Future studies are required to determine clinical efficacy and evaluate safety after long-term therapy in meibomian gland dysfunction patients. If you have a plate warming setting on your oven, use that. If not, set your oven to the l owest temperature which should be 50 to 60 degrees C. Furthermore, a statistically significant improvement in ocular symptoms was also observed in test eyes only. Surprisingly, the improvement in ocular comfort scores was observed as early as the evening of treatment Day 1, suggesting that the eyebag produces an increase in ocular comfort for at least 12 h following single use. Although subjects still had raised ocular comfort at around 6 months after the trial, comfort was maintained best in those who continued treatment 1–8 times a month. It should be noted that subjects were not masked and, therefore, some placebo effect could be possible, although the effect was marked and occurred in all subjects.
