The Fellow Ode Grinder is quite stunning, having the usual Fellow aesthetics. It is remarkably compact, with a measurement of 4.25″ by 9.5″ by 9.5″. You shouldn’t have a problem fitting this grinder on your bench. However, its portability does come at the cost of a bean hopper. The Fellow Ode Grinder is designed such that it is a single-dose grinder. Hence, it can only hold a maximum of 80g of beans. The Ode is priced as a top-shelf grinder, yet some key aspects of its performance are only mediocre. There are many burr grinders on the market that can perform just as well or better for less money. Conclusion Opus is made to grind for all brew methods, from espresso to cold brew. Ode is built to dominate brewed coffee, which means that Ode is not suitable for espresso.

Some users have ran into issues with beans jamming up their burrs. The Gen 2 Brew Burrs grind finer and with more precision. The broader grind range is exceptional for every brew method except espresso. With new anti-static technology for less grind mess, a redesigned load bin for smoother bean feeding, and an expanded 100-gram catch cup for batch brews, the next generation of grinding is here. Extraction Tests: We measured brewed coffee samples with a coffee refractometer to evaluate the level of total dissolved solids (TDS) as a measure of grind quality. It also has fins built into the interior, making it easier to pour your coffee grinds without spills, although these make it harder to get every last grind out. Fellow spent two years in development to bring you the next generation of the Fellow Ode Grinder. From the finest pour-overs to the coarsest cold brews, your coffee will never be the same again. Unfortunately, our coffee team discovered that the Ode produces an overall inconsistent grind quality. In our analysis, it took several cups to dial in a standard pour-over setting.

When looking at grinders, the big 3 contenders for me around my price point were the Fellow Ode + SSP Burrs, OE's Apex Hand Brew Grinder, or another Baratza Vario. Ultimately from my research I went with the Ode + Burrs. As we stated earlier, the Fellow Ode brew grinder was designed for manual brewing methods- and it does an excellent job at what it is intended to do. It is not designed for espresso and so does not grind fine enough for that. Note: r/coffee would not let me post there. He doesn't believe r/coffee should be a place to discuss coffee. While I initially hadn't really thought I was going to be able to produce the fine grind needed for espresso, it's become very apparent it is definitely possible though with two main caveats. The first being it is still a step grinder, and it's going to be more difficult to dial it in the the perfect grind size for espresso. I have no doubt that you'd be able to produce some great shots with a halfway decent espresso machine, though a dedicated espresso grinder is almost always going to perform better. The second caveat is that even though the burrs can produce an espresso grind, there's no real way of knowing how the motor will hold up. While I wouldn't want to use the Ode to grind espresso shots daily, I believe it'll work great for the occasional espresso.
