Vinland Saga remains one of my favorite manga series ever. These last few omnibus volumes have moved from action/adventure/politics to more of a "day in the life" type of story which isn't quite as exciting. Marketed towards young teen males, you can see how this would appeal to that demographic as if it’s about a young boy who trains himself to be a warrior who fights forces that are bigger than him. However, author Makoto Tukimura is not telling a simple revenge story as he is using the big picture, which is the Danes’ war with the English. Although Thorfinn is the main character of this manga as he starts off as a naïve child who doesn’t know any better, it is his father Thors, who is arguably the protagonist of this volume.

The series was first serialized in Kodansha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Magazine from April 13 to October 19, 2005. The first two volumes were initially released under the Shōnen Magazine Comics imprint, [47] [48] and then reissued under the Afternoon imprint after the manga's serialization switch. [49] [50] As of June 22, 2023, 27 volumes have been published. [51]The Vinland Saga anime television series is based on the manga series of the same name by Makoto Yukimura. Twin Engine announced in March 2018 that the manga would receive an anime series adaptation, with the first season being produced by Wit Studio. The series is directed by Shūhei Yabuta, with Hiroshi Seko handling series composition, Takahiko Abiru designing the characters [1] and Yutaka Yamada composing the music. [2] The series focuses on Thorfinn, the young Iceland villager who aims to participate in wars like his retired father, Thors. Noooo *metal slap*, I need to get serious here, I appreciate this series too much to not try my best to form an actual review here.

Several characters are based on their real-life counterparts. The historical Leif Erikson is a famous Norseman; however, Yukimura imagined that he would have had a very weak nature as a warrior, so he instead fleshed Erikson out as a strong adventurer. In retrospect, Yukimura found that the series features prominently male characters, as the female ones die or are given little screen time. One of the few exceptions is Gudrid—she is based on a historical figure with the same name who made a major impact on the real Thorfinn's life, and Yukimura tries to be faithful to such an event. Meanwhile, the revengeful hunter Hild reminds Thorfinn of his sins as a Viking in the same way as in the start of the series, where Thorfinn sought revenge on Askeladd. [25] The Miꞌkmaq are grateful for the gifts, but are still wary. The Miꞌkmaq eventually come out of the woods and they try to communicate with the Northmen.
