About this deal

So while I like the small deck, small hand, and the ability to swap in advanced cards, there is definitely room for this to improve. The English units are spread out so that you most likely cannot stop the Viking Leaders from winning their initial battles and taking your cities. And that is the biggest issue: no Berserker units = no movement = no conquest for 1/2 of the Viking turns that round. If the leader wins the battle and still has units on his card as well as movement remaining, he can continue to move. The massive invading Vikings under the command of their leaders is a size-able force to reckon with.

The Vikings will often get 4 or more Hits when they roll, so unless I have a lot of Fyrd left after my first roll, I will command-decision anyone I can to fight another day. A player must play at least one movement card from their hand, which will indicate the number of armies that can move and the number of spaces those armies may move.

Movement is a simple affair, there is no unit drop off or pick up, and armies must stop when in a region with the enemy.

A Wargamers Needful Things is a one stop blog for Wargamers, Military Minifig collectors, Toy Soldier collectors and military history obsessives. If the Viking player gains control of a shire containing a city, place a Viking Control token on the space. The English win if both Treaty of Wedmore cards have been played on either side and the Vikings don’t control at least 7 city shires at the end of Round 5 or later. In this Battle, I was rolling my maximum dice, including 2 dice for the Housecarl units and 3 dice for the Thegn units, but the dice gods didn’t smile on me. A leader army can use remaining movement after the battle, but an army without a leader ends its movement where the battle occurs. But this time it’s to help the English ward off the invading Vikings from the north in 878: Vikings – Invasion of England. At 15mm you can tell that they’re soldiers carrying axes and spears but beyond that, the detail is a bit lost. Players who don’t know if war games are for them will be rewarded with 878: Vikings, if for any reason, just to see what a really well-done dice rolling combat game is like. For each blank face rolled, you have a 'Command Decision' and may use that to retreat a unit in the battle to an adjacent area. On their turn each faction will receive Reinforcements, activate their Leaders (this is mostly for the Vikings as the English don’t get a Leader until the 5th Round), Move their armies, Fight in regions where there are both enemy and friendly troops and then draws cards back up to 3 cards.
