About this deal

We always recommend removing the existing finish completely first (by sanding or stripping), as the underlying problems inherent with polyurethane finishes (yellowing and cracking) will still happen over time, and will cause the entire coating to degenerate. This did take a lot of elbow grease but if you have some help you can get done in a day (only took me two)! This means that it will renovate older dirtier furniture and leave you with the deep grain enriching Briwax shine. I’m not familiar with Danish oil, but my understanding would be that and the briwax would need to be maintained at some point some years down the road. Hi Linda, I’m honestly really not sure which color of wax to use if you don’t wish to make them darker.

My kitchen cabinets didn’t have any handles to being with, so this was the perfect time to add some. I actually had better luck where the finish was more worn, so it may be just what your cabinets need. If you are trying to put pulls on a drawer with a single hole in the middle, perhaps look for cup pulls or pulls that will mostly hide the hole once it is installed.

As for paint color, yes I would probably bring the paint color thoughout to give it a cohesive flow. There are many copies of Teak Oil, and many alternative oil-based finishes including the traditional linseed and tung oil based products. Of course it depends on where it is used, but in general, if you cannot get a shine with a soft buffing, it is time to re-apply. As with any clear finish, oils do not give complete protection from the harsh rays of the New Zealand sun. Even if it did wear down in the areas that are touched or handled a lot, it wouldn’t take long to rub and buff some wax in.

Considering the skirting boards are pine and the doors will have oak veneer, you may need to experiment a bit if you are looking for them to match, but that is your personal preference. No, Briwax Danish Oil does not come in colours, but you can tint it with Briwax Spirit-based Wood Dye. With old Kwila or Teak furniture, clean and sand down the old 'silvered' finish, try using the Antique Mahogany Spirit-based Dye, and then Teak Oil to bring the finish up like new. Unfortunately, I think the wax would accentuate the scratches more as it will stay embedded and make them darker. For most purposes, Teak Oil can be treated exactly the same as Danish Oil, except that the final finish is a high gloss.I did use Briwax once to make an outdated shiny brass ceiling fan look like antique brass and it turned out fantastic! There is no faster, easier way to colour and protect wood mouldings, spindles, and unpainted furniture. However, we wouldn't suggest using Danish Oil where the surface is likely to be used for cutting; sharp knives can cut through the surface into the wood, which will allow water to get into the wood at a later stage and damage the finish. Once the Briwax has set, you can take your updating to another level by updating the cabinet hardware.

Lightly sand the surface with a 240 grade sand paper and then apply Briwax Danish Oil thinned with mineral turps by 15-20%. I’m sure it does wear off over quite a long period of time, probably moreso on parts of the door that are touched often, and in that case it may help to apply some new wax. Use disposable rubber gloves when handling the Briwax Spirit-based dye, as it won't come off easily! For a guide and comparison of our wax polishes, have a read of our blog, Wax Polishes, Which Should I Use?
