The motto is also a reference to their family origins – they were born with the surname Catenacci, their father having emigrated to Canada from Lazio, Italy. This aftershave balm, as well as moisturising the skin, has a toning and emollient effect leaving the face soft, protected and gently scented with the Wood Pour Homme fragrance by Dsquared. The fragrance opens with Calabrian bergamot, mandarin and Sicilian lemon and is enriched with elegant, sharp notes of ginger. The dry down offers a strong sillage with notes of virile and seducing cypriol, deep and sensual ambrox and an enveloping musk which rounds out this Aromatic Woody eau de toilette. At this stage, I like to imagine that I’m walking through a Canadian forest – walking past a pile of freshly cut wood.

Wood Pour Femme is a contemporary and vibrant composition with Sicilian mandarin and raspberry leaf expressing joy and vivacity, combined with lily of the valley and magnolia which add fresh, ethereal notes. In 2005 Christina Aguilera closed a fashion show stripping male models of their clothes and two years later, Rihanna came onto the runway in an American classic car, before strutting her stuff for DSquared2. Alongside men's eau de toilette, you'll find handy travel-sized editions, shower gels and indulgent aftershave balms, all displayed in a neat presentation box. To me, each note acts just like a groove in a block of wood; they add another layer to the fragrance.

The Dsquared2 perfume range is just as original, stylish and provocative as the clothing made by this Italian brand. Young and capturing the zeitgeist, the protagonist for this fragrance is sensual, confident in himself and in his personality and lives on passions, good vibes and an impulse towards what’s new. As Dean Caten says: ‘We took a negative thing and tried to take energy from it and make us stronger and creative. The emerald green, curved glass bottle reminds me of the vibrant, luscious shades of a forest filled with conifer trees, while adding a more luxurious feel.

Top notes are Lemon, Bourbon Pepper and Santolina; middle notes are Vetiver, Cedar and resins; base notes are Ambroxan, Cypriol Oil or Nagarmotha and. And although it mellows into a more woody-aromatic base, it offers a surprisingly fresh, invigorating and positive opening.

The infusion of precious and seductive osmanthus and jasmine reveals an intense femininity, whilst notes of white woods and cedar, along with the depth of ambrox, round out a Floral Woody perfume with an unmistakable character. I can’t think of a specific fragrance that it reminds me of, but it feels like walking through a forest in springtime, or the smell of freshly cut timber. The wood theme concept for the fragrances again references their Canadian roots – it’s the third most forested country on earth – but in Wood Pour Homme, in its manly dark brown bottle, the base notes of vetiver, white woods and Ambroxan are floated in on a classic Italian citrus trio of Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian lemon and mandarin orange.
