About this deal

The competition is open to pupils from years 7-9 and you will work as part of a team (between 4 and 6 in a team) In the activity children have to come up with a design for their own roller coaster, which they can then build with straws, pipe cleaners, and some other common arts and crafts materials. Creating a paper reflection of the stages of design to be used as part of the final judging process (maximum of 8 x A4 sheets) Although Dragon Challenge will be missed by theme park veterans and thrill seekers everywhere, it lives on in fond memories as one of Islands of Adventure’s first coasters. For those with a keen eye, references to Dueling Dragons still exist in Hagrid’s queue. Upon entering the building for the first time, take a peek along the walls decorated with paintings of magical creatures and you may just see the faded emblem of Hogwarts’ dueling club, surrounded by a blue and red dragon facing off–reminiscent of the ones who once stood guard by the gates. Don’t show any examples to sway their thinking! After an initial idea, provide materials for building. Our Roller Coaster STEM guide includes student handouts to walk them through each step of the engineering design process. Helpful hints during building:

This process continues as the coaster moves through loops, hills, and turns until it reaches the starting point. Paper Roller Coaster Physics

Ask an Expert

Roller coasters are all about physics! Unlike cars and trains, roller coaster cars don’t have engines. Instead, they rely on gravitational potential energy (basic gravity combined with an object’s elevation) to power their thrilling journey. Roller coasters need smooth changes, enough energy, and clever design to counter friction and air resistance.

This energy is determined by the marble’s height relative to the lowest point in the coaster. The higher it is, the more potential energy it has. Kinetic Energy (Motion Energy):Figure 3. Before the Harry Potter refurbishment, the queue was themed as a ruined castle where the Fire and Ice dragons lived. The queue passed through dungeons with human skeletons, torches and cobwebs. To ride Fire, guests would go left, while riders wanting to ride Ice would go right at the intersection point. [29] Roller coasters don’t need engines like cars or trains. How do they move so fast and excitingly then? As children designed and planned their idea, they worked on their architectural skills. As they began to build and create, they became engineers. The run must stand on a flat horizontal surface like the floor or a table/countertop/desk/ piece of cardboard. It can be taped to this surface. It cannot be taped to or supported by anything else (the ceiling, walls, furniture, a person, etc.).Fallibroome Academy, Beech Hall, Congleton High School, Kings Girls, Kings Boys, Tytherington High. Because of friction, your marble will always need to start slightly higher than the very top of the loop. Otherwise, it will never have enough energy to make it through the loop without stopping.

Marden, Duane. "Dragon Challenge Layout Photo (Universal Studios Islands of Adventure)". Roller Coaster DataBase. If you make your ball run taller, it can take longer for the ball to travel through it. However, building a taller ball run can be difficult. It needs to be sturdy so it does not fall over. For example, you might need to connect beams in triangular shapes to form trusses to support a tall ball run.
