Compared to FM (Frequency Modulation) radios, DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radios offer several advantages. DAB+ digital radios have been developed and launched in Europe from the late 1980s. They transmit radio signals digitally, resulting in better sound quality. In addition, DAB radios offer an extended choice of content, as more radio stations (radio programmes) can be transmitted on a single frequency. DAB radios are less prone to failure and come with less static noise than FM radios. At the same time they offer more options for interaction, as they can receive text, images or even videos in addition to sound. Although some Pure radios can be upgraded unfortunately many digital radios cannot be updated. This is often because of the hardware inside the radio. Finding the serial number The reduced, clear design with its compact measurements conceals lavish sound technology combined with ridiculously easy handling, allowing you to use your internet radio in your living room, your Bluetooth radio in the kitchen, and your very compact radio in the bathroom, while the radio alarm is ideal for the bedroom and the portable radio provides you with sound all around - in your own outdoors space or on the road. No cable required: Your favourite tunes wherever you want them The 2.4″ TFT colour display has a resolution of 320×240 and in digital radio mode shows the name of the station and programme information, the time and signal strength. Tuning into Classic FM in the FM mode The Pure One Classic Series 2 showcases its information on an LCD display, which can present up to 32 digits at a time. The display type is clear and easy to read, providing users with a seamless navigation experience.When adjusting the volume of the radio or changing radio stations sometimes a sound can be heard through the headphones. This seems to occur in time with the change of information on the display. It’s disappointing to find this on the radio and whether it bothers you could depend on your own listening experience. User interface Pure’s DAB+ radio with CD player is a device that can receive the digital DAB+ format and is also able to play CDs. It looks like a normal CD player but has the added functionality of a DAB+ radio. Reception of DAB and FM radio stations is comparable to other portable radios we have tested. The radio struggled to receive Times Radio in our location, but this is the same with radios we’ve tested from Roberts and Sony. Sometimes FM stations can sound distorted as it attempts to receive the station in stereo. An option in the menu allows for ‘forced mono’ which may help with weaker stations. Digital radio station list on the Pure Elan One Its fun, bouncy sound works well with music and isn’t too harsh on the lower-quality stations doing the rounds on the DAB spectrum – some use such a low bit-rate as to be all-but unlistenable. Some voice-only broadcasts can make the One Flow sound a little too bass-driven – a tiny bit muffled – but it’s one of the best-sounding models of its size. It’s a pity there are no equalisation options available here, as having some basic control over bass and treble levels could have solved this small issue. After connecting the radio to the mains or inserting the batteries a push of the knob will switch on the radio. The radio will scan for digital radio stations the first time that it’s turned on and subsequently return to the last listened to station.

It’s within The Lounge that the radio starts to feel as if it’s straining against the limitations of its interface. Internet radio stations and podcasts can be browsed by letter, or searched for by selecting each letter within a virtual keyboard using the Select dial. This is rather basic compared with some rivals, which let you single-out “local” (usually within the same country) stations, and often even have a separate sub-menu for BBC channels. Switch-on the Pure Elan Connect and you’ll be taken straight to network settings, not only for fetching internet radio stations and podcasts, but also to keep time. There follows a slightly confusing set of choices for things such as daylight savings – for which the default is ‘no’… why would anyone want a radio that gives the wrong time for half the year?!. Nevertheless, at least connecting to the home Wi-Fi network is easy if you’re using a WPS-enabled Wi-Fi router. I can’t receive Radio X on my Pure Evoke 1XT. Where do I apply for the free software available to upgrade my radio?

CD meets internet radio: DAB+ or DAB plus Pure radio with CD player equals a 2-in-1 solution that allows you to listen to CDs as well as DAB+ radio stations with a single device. Radio alarm DAB+ by Pure Media Player lets you plug into any shared uPnP music libraries available over the same Wi-Fi network the One Flow is connected to, but The Lounge is where most online features live. It gives access to Podcasts, Internet Radio stations and, once you’ve registered online, FlowSongs, which is Pure’s own music store.

It’s still a perfectly serviceable, clear interface – just getting on a bit. The main menu is a simple list of key features: Digital Radio (i.e. DAB, it still has top billing), The Lounge, Media Player, FM Radio and Auxiliary Input. But the real advantage of web radio is access to podcasts, which the Pure Elan Connect presents in a simple file structure. You can scroll down lists of podcasts and episode titles, for which the display is just about large enough. Additional features: In addition to sound, Bluetooth radios with DAB+ technology can transmit images, information regarding the station, title or artist, and even videos, if the station allows for it.
