About this deal

One often overlooked aspect of Chinese fast lenses is the actual F/T-stop of the lens. (not just Chinese fast lenses, f1.2 is a very ambiguous aperture, frequently used for f1.29) I tested this lens for center brightness in a controlled setting & 0.95 is at least 1EV faster than 1.4, the manufacturer is not cheating, this is a true F1 lens. The same cannot be said about the Mitakon 35mm 0.95 mk2? lens that I’ve owned before. That lens offered about 1/3rd of a stop illumination difference between wide open & 1.4. At max aperture and close distances (0.5m-1.0m), both have that v soft focus rendering, plus plenty of "glow". On my 7A, by about 2m, that glow is virtually gone, but soft rendering + slightly low contrast remains.. Stopping down to f1.4 sees an improvement, and good by f2. This is the experience i searched for when I bought the Pro 3, but Fujifilm didn’t take it all the way which make the pro 3 an X-T model with a Rangefinder design. 🙂 It may be an acquired taste shooting at f/0.95 exclusively but think of it as a different paintbrush and with a bit of patience I think you can create unique images with this lens.

A Review of the New TTArtisan 35mm f/0.95 Lens | Fstoppers

Overall you will always feel that a lens has its history. That’s not a bad thing, it will give some characteristic shots. For a photographer like me, that started with a Fujifilm in the mirrorless era, the focusing ring equals to a vintage lens. In other words, the manual focus has never been ”perfect” for me, if a perfect focus ring means smooth handling and a good degree of travel. It is recommended to have a look at this article first to get an idea how this brightness graph works. I’m not in to specific numbers. But I asked the question in a Swedish Fuji-group on facebook, and people want this kind of lense. Look at X-Pro 3, all the criticisms it got at launch, and now. People love it! It’s simple, it’s basic. That kind of costumer want a quality manual lense. The camera-to-lens size ratio on the X-H2S and X-Pro3 was quite ideal but do not expect an optical marvel in the TTArtisan 35mm f/0.95. It struggles wide open but I hope that the sample images also show that you can create decent results.Mostly because it is very easy to move out of position inadvertently and you are never really sure which aperture you are shooting at as you do not get verification in the viewfinder. The 7Artisans 35mm F0.95 is not the best lens for the Fuji X system on paper, not even on that specific focal length. But it changed my thoughts about everything when it comes to capturing a photo. How I want my camera to feel when composing a frame and get that focus on point. So please Fujifilm, please join this trend and do it the Fujiway! Thanks for yet another well done review. I have compared this and the Zhong Yi (for M mount) again and again, but can’t decide on any of them. And in this perspective, it is then important to say the TTArtisan 35mm ƒ0.95 is 1% the price of the Leica 50mm Noctilux and easily only approximately 33% of its weight, and we cannot run from the laws of physics in lens design.

35mm F0.95 – TTArtisan APS-C 35mm F0.95 – TTArtisan

For comparison’s sake I included the Zhong Yi Mitakon 50mm 0.95 II here. Despite the significantly smaller rear lens diameter interestingly the amount of optical vignetting is very much comparable to the Zhong Yi 50mm 0.95 and there is also none of that strange light spill. The lens I bought was a Yashica ML 50mm F1.4, and that just opened up a whole new world for me. It helped me to get some bokeh on my images, and the lens wasn’t made out of plastic. Don’t get me wrong, the XC lenses have some great glass if you’re on a budget. But they’re slow compared to the f1.4 prime, obviously. Whereas the 35mm is light, compact, and ergonomically superior, the 50mm f/0.95 is a beastly, viewfinder crowding, carpal-tunnel-inducing tank of a lens. This comparison was done at 0.7 m focus distance, you may get slightly different results at other distances. Sharpness infinity (42mp Sony A7rII) I’ve been looking at 7Artisans’ and TTArtisan’s 50mm 0.95 but can’t decide which one to go ahead with, as both do have purple fringing and chromatic aberrations. I already have a Pentax SMC M 50 f1.4 that's excellent, so I wasn't sure getting an f1.2 was really justified. But now seeing the pretty minimal difference to f0.95 I'm second guessing whether it's worth it. Pretty much any of the Chinese lenses can do the dreamy look wide open. Thanks Bastian, for this excellent review (as we have come to expect from this blog). Having had my eye on the Mitakon for a long time, I was waiting on the edge of my seat for this review since I first learned about the existence of this lens, somewhere in the comments on this very blog.
