The Roots and Branches project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, and aims to invest in and strengthen our work. We have six Regional Facilitators throughout the UK. They work together as part of a National Team to learn from and share the work of our groups. In the North East of England, Incredible Edible is working in partnership with Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC), a charity promoting healthy and sustainable lifestyles. MEC work with communities and business around food, running projects such as Growing Middlesbrough and the Patchwork Community Orchard. Our Regional Facilitator for the North East of England, Joe Dunne, works for MEC and is brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to support the Roots and Branches project as well as Incredible Edible groups in the region.

Get some people to join you – publicise your idea, get speaking to people in the community centre/library/pub and hold a meeting. Remember ‘if you eat you’re in’, so not everyone needs to be a grower; you’ll need a range of skills in the team. Think about practicalities – locations with good footfall, signage, insurance, what to plant, access to water, who’s going to water and when, safeguarding, who are your local producers and how you could involve them, as well as what local groups might want to learn about food. Plan your activities – start small (remember the power of small actions). Once you start, people will gain interest and you’ll get more support for the next stage of your plan. Start with one plate ( community, learning, business) then move onto another. You are inspired! You can see how spinning the three plates could change your community and you want to make it happen. Participating in Edible Arrangements fundraising is the best way to raise funds for your project and organization. The company wants to be part of your event and offers you its famous chocolate-dipped strawberries, apples, and bananas.

We will be developing a leadership programme to further support our community leaders across the UK who are instrumental to developing our Incredible Edible groups, as well as supporting local (and national) connections and networks of Incredible people who will have the skills and motivation to continue doing Incredible things well beyond the lifetime of the project funding. Learn, plan and advertise – what worked well, what not so well, what do you want to do more of, advertise it, talk about it, promote it. Do it! – get out there, plant, grow, water, chat, connect, chat some more, meet new people, share your learning and promote your local food producers.

The Regional Facilitators also provide face to face and phone support to new groups who are emerging, as well as encouragement to the groups who have been Incredible for a while. They also provide regional support by gathering groups together to offer mutual support to each other.
