About this deal

Having analysed the plotting, language and characters in her tales, it’s clear that Potter was more than just inspired by these folktales,” Zobel Marshall said. I could not think what to say about what is one of my favourite books that I have just read again, so I took what Joel Chandler, aged five said: “Brer Rabbit Stories collected by Joel Chandler Harris, aged five. They are pretty funny in the middle because he has an idea and says ‘just don’t throw me in’, then he does and at the end, he’s escaped.” Mr Tumpy's Caravan (discovered in a collection of her papers, in 2011; not the 1949 publication of similar title) [54] The Teddy Bear's Party, illustrator Eileen Soper, Little Book 5, 1989 reprint as The Night The Toys Had A Party, illustrator Susan Pearson Ah, Brer Rabbit! I had truly forgotten what an evil little git you are! It's clear to me now, after rereading these classic tales, that you are obviously an avatar of Loki.

Youngs, Ian (22 February 2011). " 'Lost' Enid Blyton book unearthed". BBC Online . Retrieved 22 February 2011.It's worth noting that the tar baby story also appears, in similar form, in the Jatakas, a 4th-century BCE Indian collection of stories depicting the Buddha in former lifetimes. Apparently, a similar story also exists in ancient native North American culture, along with other stories that are similar to tales here. This could imply at least two possibilities. Do all human cultures share stories with similar basic elements, which manifest themselves as expressions of basic human needs? Or is it evidence of early cross-fertilization between cultures which have since evolved, divided, sub-divided and moved about across the globe? Five short stories about Brer Rabbit plus an extra one entitled 'The Tale of the Silkworms'. The Brer Rabbit stories are: 'Oh, Brer Rabbit!', 'Brer Rabbit and Mister Lion', 'Brer Rabbit and Mister Ram', 'Brer Rabbit is a Brave Fellow', Brer Wolf's Mistake' Brer Rabbit is a Brave Fellow' sees the hero battling with Brer Fox while 'Brer Wolf's Mistake' involves Brer Rabbit, Brer Wolf and a case of mistaken identity that works in favour of Cousin Wildcat. And 'The Tale of the Silkworms' involves a burglar who runs into the arms of a policeman due to interference by the silkworms! Somewhat bizarre indeed!

The other thing that crossed my mind finally all these years is what on Earth does 'Brer' mean? I think as a kid I assumed it was a title of respect, like 'Mr'. But there was also some animals referred to as 'Mr', so it was a bit strange but I never pursued it before. On this reading, I googled it. A fun tale of a mischievous little rabbit; a great story for anyone who is looking to appease their inner child! Runaway Teddy Bear and Other Stories, illustrator Eileen Soper, E. H. Davie et al., Pitkin Pleasure Book

In 'Brer Rabbit and Mister Lion', the latter is trapped in a cave and reluctantly Brer Rabbit helps him escape. He was right to be reluctant because when Mr Lion is out he grabs Brer Rabbit and has him as a prisoner when Cousin Wildcat comes along but he tells Brer Rabbit that it is his own fault in releasing Mister Lion. Another rather strange story.

Tales of Brave Adventure - 13 stories about Robin Hood, 14 stories about King Arthur (1st edition published by Dean & Sons Ltd.) Potter herself “never publicly admitted the source of any inspiration for her drawings, plotlines or protagonists”, Zobel Marshall says. Hollindale argued in his lecture that this may have been because she “misunderstood her own talent and, to the end of her life, was afraid of being caught out as a cheat”. Enid Blyton's Nature Lover's Book, illustrators Donia Nachshen and Noel Hopking, published by Evans Brothers Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic.
