His range was prodigious; he published nine volumes of his selected journalism of which the first, Taking Sides, covered subjects as diverse as the death watch beetle, Field Marshal Montgomery, Wagner, homophobia, censorship, Eldridge Cleaver, arachnophobia, theatrical nudity, and the North Thames Gas Board.

In the local streets, the school's conspicuous uniform, including a blue coat, knee breeches and yellow socks, attracted unwanted attention. Levin resigned, and immediately received offers from The Guardian and The Times to join them as a columnist. Levin never married or had children, but is survived by his partner Liz Anderson, who tended him during a long decline from Alzheimer's disease. He was offered the post of "general editorial dogsbody, which was exactly what I had been looking for".
