About this deal

This is an autobiographical work of Mr. Reitz’s time in the commandoes during the last of the Boer Wars. The author limited the scope of this work to the actual war and only referenced his antebellum life in the first chapter or in passing in later chapters. This was a refreshing change from some modern autobiographies of war that spend large portions of the book discussing life before the war service is ever discussed. Their next big mission, Operation Jubilee, was a test of the defences of the port of Dieppe on 19 August 1942. Around 5,000 men of the Canadian 2nd Division were joined by 1,075 British commandos, with naval and air support. Commando, Private Apache, No. 912, P.46, Nazi says "Ja, more British to kill", fellow soldier is shown thinking "This man is truly evil, how can he think like this?" The comics were popular in Finland, where they were known by the name "Korkeajännitys", meaning "high excitement" - it's a wordplay, referring to "korkeajännite", which would mean "high voltage". Hence the tagline: "Iskee kuin miljoona volttia", meaning "Strikes like a million volts". The term "korkeajännitys" doesn't exist in Finnish language outside this wordplay. Special issues of Korkeajännitys based on Finnish themes have been published by Egmont Publishing since 1998. These themes include Finnish Civil War, Finnish War as well as Winter War and Continuation War. Commando released their 5,000th issue, 'Zero Hour,' in March 2017. [14] Artists and writers [ edit ]

For the generations of men whose interest in military history was triggered by reading war comics in their youth, here at last is Commando’s toughest-ever collection of Second World War stories. True Brit showcases the best fighting action – and at a size 25% bigger then the originals for maximum impact! As well as the comics, annuals were also produced in 1989 and 1990, each containing seven new stories. The annuals were in full colour and illustrated in the style of the time, not in the original style of the comics. The Norton Owners Club library holds copies of a wide range of literature about Nortons. These include books, sales brochures, price lists, test reports and other publications. As the Second World War progressed, commandos were deployed in the role of assault troops. They played a key role during the D-Day landings in June 1944, where they destroyed gun batteries and seized bridges and other targets. They performed a similar role in the fighting in Sicily and Italy in 1943-45. And during the operations in Burma in 1943-45, commandos served with the Chindits and in the amphibious landings in the Arakan. This is first hand account of the 2nd Boer War from the perspective a young Boer soldier. The book is well written and the account shows the hardships of both conventional war and the guerrilla war that was fought thereafter. Colin Maxwell, a writer and artist of comics featuring historical characters and events, began writing for Commando in 2020 with issue #5371.

Manuel Benet Blanes (credited as Manuel Benet), an artist from Spain, is one of the most prolific of current artists on Commando, having illustrated the covers and interiors of hundreds of issues. The Dieppe raid made it clear that seizing a port would be extremely difficult. Any future operations would require adequate air bombardment prior to landing. A need for improved amphibious capabilities was also recognised. The British therefore developed a whole range of specialist vehicles for amphibious operations. Costly failures, like Dieppe, supported critical views of the Commandos. But many other raids, including the Bruneval and St Nazaire operations, produced excellent results. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Commando comic, which was first launched in 1961, this anthology features the ten greatest-ever commando raids stories.

This is a very readable book. It is remarkable how a civilized decent man took such satisfaction in shooting people. Where else could you come across titles like ‘Desert Fox’, ‘They Flew By Night’, ‘Sea Strike’, ‘The Death Or Glory Mob’ or ‘Zero Smasher’? And where else could you go into action alongside a British army sergeant hunting down a German tank with only his Tommy gun and a couple of grenades . . . or the Lancaster pilot who knew no fear until he was put behind the controls of an aircraft that was jinxed? This book was written in the late 1960s and most of what is written still applies today. As the original was long out of print, the publisher approached Paul Dunstall who gave permission to reprint it and wrote a new foreword Gordon Livingstone who was one of the first artists employed by Commando when it began in 1961. His first issue was Commando No 4- Mercy for None first printed in July 1961. Livingstone produced the interior story art for over 360 issues of Commando, his last work being issue no 3293- Sweeney's Island, released in December 1999, the same year he retired. [15] He died in 2017. [16] The stories contain certain characteristic motifs; to mention a few – courage, cowardice, patriotism, dying for the sake of one's country, noble actions, and making a cup of refreshing tea while in the face of danger, enmity turning into friendship when the going gets tough, and so on. Apart from portraying these universal qualities, Commando Comics also show soldiers in national stereotypes, glorifying Allied soldiers, but showing soldiers as a mixture of good and evil. [2] There was usually no continuity between books; each book was a complete story with start and finish, though recently series (2 or 3 stories) of books following the same character have been published.

Containing 10 issues: The Family Honour, Tin Can Warriors, Submarine Warriors, Killers in No-Man's Land, Mooney's Monster, Mongrel Squadron, Roar of the Guns, Duel over the Desert, Battling Bessie, Sentenced to Death! The War Office completed a study that concluded large commando forces were not required in the post-war world and the Army Commandos were abolished in 1946.
