Ashes has the potential to be phenomenal. It’s highly strategic but with a very fast set-up, it is very immersive with fantastic artwork and has a lot of expansions for replayability. Use dice as resources! The Dice Pool mechanic gives players the resources that they need to bring out powerful spells and creatures moments after the game begins, while still offering an interesting array of powers on their own. Swap Channel Magic in for: Disengage isn’t great in PVP and it’s not substantially improved here, especially considering how dubious exhaustion is in RR. It buys you a main action, but so does Channel Magic, which also gives you crucial dice fixing and healing. Ditch it.

Swap Channel Magic in for: Through a certain lens, Chant of Worship is just Channel Magic with more steps. Toss it. While Ashes offers an innovative way to play a CCG, as a stand-alone product this set doesn’t quite deliver on the game’s true potential. Definitely worth a look if you and a fellow card game enthusiast are after something vibrant and thought provoking. The Chained List is a rule for the competitive Ashes environment with a couple goals in mind. What has she done?” Psychic Vampire: This unit is on the list for similar reasons that Three-Eyed Owl was, in that disrupting a player’s hand in the First Five goes against a core tenant of the Ashes play experience. While Psychic Vampire is not as proactively able to do this, options exist for forcing your opponent into triggering its effect, and I believe it is best to remove these hand disruption elements from round 1 altogether instead of leaving them out in the wild for players to unsuspectingly get ambushed by. Swap Channel Magic in for: Nothing urgent to replace, really. You may not need all 3 copies of Syphon? Swap Channel Magic in for: Don’t freak out, but Freezing Blast isn’t even that bad in Red Rains mode. I think the weakpoint here is actually Crystal Shield. Unit Guard is always good, but Crystal Shield is still a pretty questionable usage of resources in a game where every die counts.If you include three copies of a spellboard card, it means that you want to draw into it (whether or not you plan to First Five it).
The Iron Rhino receives a dramatic update, making it much more worth its steep cost. Iron Rhinos come crashing to the table with Gigantic 1 and Overkill 2, on top of a 7/4/0 statline! Any way you slice it, the Rhino is here to do some damage! The first release will be the Ashes Reborn 1.5 Upgrade Kit. Why 1.5? We’ve gone through every single card that has been released for the game and have assessed and reevaluated each one. It’s the same game you’ve always loved, but many cards have been reworded, improved, or rebalanced, and all will appear in the Upgrade Kit. Future printings of the core Rise of the Phoenixborn set, as well as all the expansions, will be updated to include 1.5 revisions. Just when you thought the mighty Phoenixborn had faded into the unknown, an ally appears, and thus a partnership between Plaid Hat Games and Team Covenant is forged! Swap Channel Magic in for: Some choices here. Resummon is playable, but Noah himself isn’t really on the list of people who can maximize it. It does let you, functionally, remove an exhaustion token, and that can be worth 2 dice in some circumstances. Meanwhile, Sleight of Hand is usually just as bad here as it is in PVP, and Bound Soul is also dubious value. Trust your gut. None of those three cards are gonna win the game for you, and Noah is going to be best with all 3 copies of Channel. Just a matter of what you take out. Use dice as resources!
