About this deal

Following Nash Point’s automation in 1998, all the lighthouses were monitored from the Trinity House operations depot in Harwich. Over the years there has been considerable discussion and debate about the function of the Yorkshire coastal fortlets. One suggestion is that they might have constituted a signalling chain – using beacons – monitoring movements and hostile activities along the coast. However, it would have required an enormous tower for Goldsborough to transmit any messages to Whitby, irrespective of the compounding effect of sea frets. An alternative may have been for them to communicate inland to forts such as Malton (via intermediate beacons), but it would still have taken some time for the military unit stationed there – Numerus Supervenientium Petuarensium – to mobilise and march to the coast or to intercept any raiders heading inland. Whilst on watch, the keepers would be stationed in the fog signal building, keeping a visual watch. Eddystone Lighthouse, Plymouth Breakwater Lighthouse and the Draystone Buoy, located off the southeastern end of Penlee Point, would be used as reference marks to determine visibility and when to sound the foghorn.National Heritage List for England: English Heritage. 2013. Now, although a visit to Mizen Head in Cork is pretty straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable. 1. Location

Rare example of an extant Admiralty Signal Station. The conservation works to this building focussed on the remediation of significant structural movement to some of the walls. In addition, repointing was required to all exterior (and some interior) faces and roof. Internally, the timber floor joists were replaced and planking to mimic the original construction. The main north facing doorway was fitted with a grilled doorway, to restrict public access.

The walk: The Sma’ Glen - An ancient pass full of historical interest

I’ve no idea how many times I’ve driven through this peaceful place but I thought it was time to re-visit the Sma’ Glen and climb the hills that form its skyline. It turned out to be a great hillwalk with wide-ranging views. The lonely hills of upper Glen Almond make a strong impression on the senses and those wild views are in direct contrast to the comparatively lowland scenery of Strathearn in the south. Some years ago the glen was threatened by plans for a windfarm. The No. 10 set made use of newly developed radar techniques to carry eight channels over any obstacles between land and line links. Numerous radio sets are on display in the Museum including the original No. 10 set.
