They’ve evolved to excavating intricate tunnel systems with multiple chambers, entrances, and escape routes. A wombat is capable of shifting three cubic feet of dirt in one day. 17. Wombat burrows are really long The three species are the Bare-Nosed Wombat (Vombatus Ursinus), the Southern Hairy-nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons), and the Northern Hairy Nosed (Lasiorhinus krefftii). Wombats are completely herbivorous, eating grasses, plants, herbs, roots, bark, and mosses. They spend most of their time grazing, using their rodent-like teeth and very strong jaws to grip and tear their food. Wombats have a special stomach gland that helps them easily digest these tough foods. They don’t need to drink much water, as they get most of their water from the plants they eat. They are nocturnal animals so they can often be found grazing at night. Wombat burrows are continuously being built by their owners into a long, complex network of tunnels and warrens. They can feed between 3-8 hours per night, and spend the rest of the time digging new or more tunnels and improving tunnel chambers, entrances, and exits.
Some wombats are social while others are loners, depending on the species. For example, common wombats tend to be solitary and inhabit their own burrows, while the two other species tend to be more social and live together in larger burrow groups of 10 to 15 wombats. A group of wombats is known as a wisdom, a mob, or a colony. Lifespan: Other diseases recorded in wombats include diabetes, arthritis, cancer, asthma and pneumonia, however, there is limited knowledge on this aspect of wombat’s life. Danger to humans Like most marsupials, wombats carry their young (often called a joey) in a front pouch. The young climb into the pouch shortly after birth and remain there till they are developed enough to emerge into the world.There are several subspecies of the common wombat: the Mainland Common Wombat ( Vombatus ursinus hirsutus), Tasmanian wombat ( Vombatus Ursinus Tasmaniensis), and the Flinders Island wombat ( Vombatus ursinus ursinus).
Similar to the koala, wombats as marsupials, are part of a particular section of mammals in the animal kingdom. This cohort has pouches where their newborn young (known as joeys) remain after birth until they are sufficiently developed. Wombats are shy, but playful animals, that have been known to chase, roll, jump and flip for fun. They are herbivores with a very slow metabolism, that can take up to 2 weeks to digest a single meal. They are able to live in very arid environments, but prefer a wet climate with forests, grasslands, and like their cousin the Koalas, eucalyptus forests. They are, however, adaptable to various habitats: from forests to plains, mountains, snowy and heath-land (shrub) areas. They grew to a height of 6 feet (1.8 meters) and weighed up to a whopping 3 tons. The equivalent to a rhinoceros. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a disappointing end to a brilliant film franchise. The first three films (and TV spin-offs) were excellent. Skull was entertainingly bad, like an Indy film made by Ed Wood with a budget. Dial is simply a shambolic travesty.

This is to limit the loss of water during hot days and to avoid predators. Food shortages and long droughts have driven this species away from their native and historic habitats. They are now found in two small locations in Queensland, Australia. To give this some perspective, the wombat drawing was created around the beginning of the bronze age. 11. Of the three wombat species, the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat is currently on the endangered animals’ list. 16. Wombats evolved to dig A group of wombats together is known as a “Wisdom of wombats”. But this is rare, as we’ll discover later. Alternative names for a group of wombats include a “mob” or “colony” of wombats. 7. The heaviest wombat recorded
The common wombat is widespread, populating Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is found only in Queensland, and the southern hairy-nosed wombat is found in a small region of the southern central coastline of Australia. However, like Koalas, and unlike kangaroos, the wombat pouch is rear-facing rather than front-facing.On average, wombats are 3.3 feet long and weigh 55 to 88 pounds.
