About this deal

However, unlike other times when Macbeth echoes the language of Lady Macbeth or the witches, this quotation doesn’t imply he is being led by them who’s been born from a woman can harm you, and you’ll never be beaten until a wood walks up a hill. So Macbeth’s like, well, that’s never gonna happen! But watch out for Macduff. Macbeth to be sure, sends some guys to kill Macduff’s family, so he’s like ‘cool’. We’ve touched on this theme when discussing all of the others. The Shakespearean audience had two concepts of leadership, stemming from medieval kings. In Macbeth, Shakespeare shows us three very different leaders. Duncan is not a good king as although he is kind and generous, he is weak. Macbeth is strong but becomes a bullying dictator. Malcolm seems to strike a healthy balance and combines the good qualities of both men. Presenter: Hey, hey, hey. The guy’s right, and he’s got the boss really thinking. Has she got a more stylised approach in mind,

At the start of the play, Macbeth shows that he is a mighty warrior when he leads the Scottish troops to victory over an invading force. Duncan, the King, rewards him by making him Thane of Cawdor. At the end of the play, when he knows he is about to die, Macbeth regains some of his old bravery, as he faces Macduff in single combat. Although Shakespeare plays often have a huge number of characters, the characters you should focus on when revising Macbeth are: These quotations come before the murder of King Duncan, and then after Lady Macbeth has lost her mind, right before her suicide The audience sees different reactions to the supernatural. Macbeth is initially curious, then driven by the supernatural and then desperate for more help. Lady Macbeth tries to control the supernatural. Both of these responses are self-destructive. Banquo has the most positive reaction. He is sceptical and dismissive of the witches. Banquo tries to explain the reality to Macbeth, but he won’t listen. Repeating your learning is the key to success. Use your summary notes to test yourself or revise for free on Seneca.

If your exam question is not focused on a character then it will be on a theme from Macbeth. Again, you need to be familiar with: the key themes; how Shakespeare presents and develops them; and the main quotations for each theme. In the exam they might be worded slightly differently, but in general the main themes in Macbeth are:

Lady Macbeth is suggesting that only if Macbeth commits the murder of King Duncan that he could be considered a real man Presenter: Hello, and welcome to The Big Scene. We’re at rehearsals for Macbeth , and scenes don’t get much bigger than this. It’s the clash with Banquo’s ghost and the director really needs the audience to appreciate Macbeth’s horror at seeing the ghost of his old best friend who he’s had murdered. This is a big challenge! Can she pull it off on this team’s budget? Presenter: Well, no one saw that coming. She’s decided she doesn’t need an actual ghost in that position at all. She’s made the audience think Macbeth’s totally lost his marbles. Oh, but what’s this?Section A of Paper 1 contains the Macbeth question and you are required to answer the one available question on the play Macbeth is told of the death of his wife, and that Birnam Wood is advancing on Dunsinane. He contemplates the pointlessness of life but remains convinced he is invincible because of the witches’ second prophecy Macbeth sees his first hallucination – a bloody dagger – after seeing Banquo and Fleance in the castle courtyard However, it also becomes clear that her original confidence was misplaced: her “little hand” is dirtied by blood, and seemingly nothing (even “all the perfumes of Arabia”) can cleanse it of her guilt and responsibility

The paradox suggests that the words of the witches might be in the form of riddles: confusing, or misleading, just as their prophecies are to MacbethWhile King of Scotland, Macbeth becomes increasingly paranoid that his act of regicide will be discovered, and that he himself will be murdered, and so Macbeth attempts to murder any person he sees as a threat (first his friend and comrade Banquo; later a thane called Macduff).
