What happens when a teenage girl’s journal that includes all of her most personal thoughts goes missing? I always love a good "person obsessed with making lists" in a book, but the storyline of losing the journal made me so anxious (which I guess in this case was also a good thing).

She has a list for everything in her journal -The boys she wants to kiss, the bad things she has done, the things she wants to do before she graduates high school, her hopes, her dreams. I think that Goffney makes it clear that there are no clear parameters and that the Black community is beyond a monolith. If you are still wondering how to get free PDF EPUB of book Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney. Seeing it coming is part of the fun, but there could have been more tension and surprise as the relationship unfolded. Overall, this book was extremely fun to binge and if I had thought of being swallowed by blankets and with a cup of tea beforehand, it would've been the perfect setting to read this in and experience the sweet nothings of the romance and friendship included within it.Fans of Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Kristina Forest’s debut I Wanna Be Where You Are will love the juicy secrets, leap-off-the-page sexual tension and the enemy-to-lover romantic arc. We were outside, and Gia was venting to a whole group of people about a Black lady who had accused her of stealing at the Gap, which she had been. The main character is an African American girl who's a senior at a predominately White high school in Austin, Texas. The characters in this novel bring life and heart to this story, each with a distinct voice and personality.

Besides, annoying tropes such as drawn-out miscommunications and love triangles are avoided, making it easy to root for them. Parents need to know that in Joya Goffney's Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry, 18-year-old Quinn, a Black girl in a predominately White high school in Austin, Texas, is blackmailed after her journal falls into the hands of a mystery person. There was something off with the pacing just because I felt like it tackled a lot of different issues. By all appearances Quinn has everything—her family is rich, she is well liked at her private school, and next fall she’s headed to Columbia, her parents’ alma mater. Then an anonymous account posts one of her lists on Instagram for the whole school to see and blackmails her into facing seven of her greatest fears, or else her entire journal will go public. Seventeen-year-old Charlie Davis, a white girl living on the margins, thinks she has little reason to live: her father drowned himself; her bereft and abusive mother kicked her out; her best friend, Ellis, is nearly brain dead after cutting too deeply; and she's gone through unspeakable experiences living on the street. I wasn't expecting the book to delve as deeply as it did into racism and how difficult and confusing it is to be a Black person around mostly white people and how it feels to be an outsider. This book covered quite a bit of grounds, racism, high school drama, rich people problems, blackmail, secrets, cyberbullying, facing fears, trust, loyalty, etc.

Despite starting off as yet another naive female protagonist, Quinn is shown to be a quirky character who is easy to like.

Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry is a multi-faceted debut YA novel about living life in the real world vs in one’s head, expanding one’s view of their community, and fighting back when things don’t go as planned. She keeps everything on lists in her precious notebook, from boys she’d love to kiss to secrets she won’t ever reveal. He is amazing hero and I just love how he atributes his story and livvy was a very enjoyable character for me as well.

That Olivia makes her feel okay to show parts of her that are rooted in her Blackness, and it truly did show! At least when we were friends, I had someone to walk down the hallway with, to eat lunch with, to text in class. It grows and grows, like a plant that you water every day, like a scar that heals from patience, like the time you take to make sure you feel okay.In her list of reasons why she wished her and Olivia would’ve been friends sooner, two stuck out to me. Quinn keeps lists of everything—from the days she’s ugly cried, to “Things That I Would Never Admit Out Loud,” to all the boys she’d like to kiss. These lists contain a lot of sensitive material, including sexual fantasies, secrets she's keeping from her parents, and feelings about race relations with the classmates in her predominately White high school. I really appreciated the inclusion of these family dynamics in the story and liked how they shaped Quinn and the plot itself, just as well. They both struggled with a concept that is not really talked about as much: being an exception to a stereotype.
