You can tell he truly cares about Nell and their interactions are often heartfelt with periods of light comic relief. So far the response has been nothing but positive, which I find really humbling and almost overwhelming. She is kind, generous and patient, and when she isn’t working she is visiting her mother in the care home or an elderly neighbour of hers.Unfortunately there are a lot of laboured musings in this and I did find my eyes skipping over the descriptions a lot, it could probably do with being a shorter novel, which is a shame as the story was nice. In 2005, we meet Nell and Dougie, both in their 30s and living in Colchester and London respectively. With wonderful writing, the book draws you in, page by page, as you follow Nell on her quest for answers, piecing together a life she knew nothing about from the few scattered clues she has been able to amass. Her portrayal of love in so many forms, especially the parental love that Flora has for Nell, and Gordon has for Dougie were simply beautiful.

Speaking from her farm in Hertfordshire, where she lives with her now grown up children Felix and Georgia, dogs, horses and sheep, North recounts how Harris became a place of inspiration just before lockdown and of solace and sustenance during it. Although he was in contact with his birth mother before she died, his birth father remains a well-kept secret. It's a quietly gripping story about family and belonging, and follows the story of three people whose lives intersect. These scenes depicted the stresses and emotions of mental health for those suffering as well as those around them. I felt it began perhaps a little too slowly, but as the story gathered pace, I became invested in Nell's story and found that I was drawn to it more and more.At first I resisted because there is still a stigma about medication — did it mean I was going nuts and had to be on ‘happy pills’?

Needless to say the tracker stalking was far too exciting and the book listening happened much later! It feels pure and untainted and I guess is a wonderful promotion of the 'upping sticks, abandoning the rat race and finding fulfilment in a slower pace of life' ideal, featuring a stunning location stripped of the non essential fripperies we mistakenly believe we cannot be without. I asked my friends to clean my house instead of throwing me a baby shower - every mother-to-be should have a nesting party! The book has a strong sense of place, and it reads like a love letter to the Outer Hebrides, in particular the Isle of Harris. And what if I could have her story in her timeframe, running concurrently with a modern story in the modern timeframe, and how can I get these two to interweave?
