According to Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, the clay content varies from 15 % in the softest lead to ca. Today, however, most pencils using the HB system are designated by a number such as 2B, 4B or 2H to indicate the degree of hardness. As the pencil core becomes softer (through the use of lower proportions of clay) it leaves a darker mark as it deposits more graphite material on the paper. Likewise, a pencil maker might use the letter “B” to designate the blackness of the pencil’s mark, indicating a softer lead. A "number 2 pencil" as we (in the US) are often told to use for filling out multiple choice answers on Scantron sheets, is right in the middle, the equivalent of "HB". though, according to this site, there's no "industry standard" so one company's HB may not be the same as another's.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. In Japan, consumers tend to prefer softer darker leads; so an HB lead produced in Japan is generally softer and darker than an HB from European producers. With our Noris eco, made from innovative WOPEX material, we have revolutionised the pencil and its manufacturing process. They're perfect for pencil drawings as artists can take advantage of the brush-like expressions, especially in the higher B grades. It is therefore suitable for artists, particularly for drawing and shading, as well as for expressive sketches and portraits. Thanks to their super-bonded lead, our pencils guarantee high break-resistance and are therefore ideal for use at school and in the office. Well, it all has to do with the HB graphite grading scale used to classify the pencil’s graphite core.Rather than bonding pieces of wood together in several stages, as in the case of traditional graphite and coloured pencils, pencils made from WOPEX are produced in a mould. though, the source of the lettering seems to be debatable according to Wikipedia - H stands for " Hardtmuth" (the surname of the owner of an art supply company) and B stands for "Budweis", the town the pencil company was relocated to but "hard" and "black" are probably more useful to remember. Our Noris eco pencils are produced using a newly developed, innovative technology: WOPEX (Wood Pencil Extrusion). The hardness of the graphite core is often marked on the pencil — look for a number (such as “2” “2-1/2” or “3”) — and the higher the number, the harder the writing core and the lighter the mark left on the paper. We address these cases on a case-by-case basis but will try our best to work towards a satisfactory solution.

I’m well aware NOW that the description clearly states it’s only one but I didn’t read the description before I bought this). Thanks to WOPEX technology, these products can be produced in a more environmentally friendly and resource-conserving way. Our tradition pencils are particularly suitable for producing clean lines and textures, as well as differentiated tones from grey to black. The jumbo triangular shape with ergonomic soft surface is particularly suitable for small children’s hands. The STAEDTLER Noris digital combines the appeal and feel of a pencil with the technology of an S Pen stylus.
