About this deal

Here are the children's books in 2022 that BookTrust think show positive images of disability, as well as titles that may prove useful in discussing disability and inclusive issues with young readers.

I’ve put my heart and soul into it and with the support and encouragement of my agent Faith and the team at Scholastic, including my amazing editor Yasmin, it’s been an incredible start to the journey. Abigail, the author and illustrator of this exceptional non-fiction book, spent most of her life not knowing she was autistic. I feel like Frankie's World has found the perfect home, and I’m excited to see the series come to life. This booklist aims to provide a range of children's and teens' books that feature characters who are autistic, or who have Autistic Spectrum Conditions. But Frankie's World is also Aoife’s love letter to being different, and that is what makes this graphic novel so timely and special.Underneath the comedy and inimitable illustration style, this a story of heart and survival, and one that will resonate with readers young and old.

Readers will be cheering Frankie on as she deals with bullies, finds what she’s good at and comes to understand herself a little better: a great story about growing up and learning who you are. So when she gets the chance to compete in a Battle of the Bands contest, Frankie couldn't be more excited. She’s smaller than everyone else in her class and has to go to the doctor every week to be measured. When Ali and Tulip's surgeon mum starts acting strangely, it's up to the Double Detectives to solve the mystery. Insightful, accessible and easy to navigate, this is an essential book for autistic andallistic(non-autistic) readers of all ages, including adults. Dooley is the author of How to Be Massive (Gill Books, 2016) and How to Deal With Poxes (Gill Books, 2017).

Aoife openly shares her experiences of being diagnosed as autistic at the age of 27, neurodiversity and how a diagnosis helped her to truly understand herself. This lovely, often funny, relatable and sensitive story about Frankie, a girl with autism, was inspired by the author Aoife Dooley’s own real life experiences. She finds it hard to pay attention in school and sometimes says random things that upset other people. Thankfully, Frankie has two best friends at school, one of whom is a wheelchair user, and her Mam, who totally gets her.She openly shares her experiences of being diagnosed as autistic at the age of 27 and how a diagnosis helped her to truly understand herself. The synopsis reads: "Twelve-year-old Frankie knows she's not like anyone else in her class but she can't quite figure out why. Still, when Frankie starts a karate class and discovers she quite likes it, it gives her some confidence, as does winning her class art competition.
