About this deal

Then we spent hours researching the different types of pens on the market, evaluating everything from their weight and sizing to their ease of use and grip design. The end result was a comprehensive list of ergonomic pens designed to assist with writing depending on your specific condition. Why We Like It: This set is designed to improve writing grips in stages. In the early stages, the tripod grips hold fingers firmly in position. As kids improve, they step down to simpler aids. The pencil buddies add a fun touch!

Why We Like It: As kids learn correct grip, they can switch to an aid like this one. It reinforces the proper grip but offers a little more freedom. I’ve been looking for washable grips for my disabled hubby’s silverware. I’d looked at the foam tubes & learned there’s no texture to them, nor would they accept a handle wider than the hole provided. Real Review: “Bought these for my son who has ADHD, ODD, dyslexia, and SPD. Before these weights we could barely read his writing, but now what a difference! To me it looks like they help him concentrate more on what he’s writing and he seems to take his time which means less mistakes.” I have to start this post by saying that I try my best not to recommend pencil grips. It may be very "un-OT" of me to say this out aloud but there it is. Real Review: “My son has issues with attention and fine motor control. He really struggled to write. As an occupational therapist, I know finger grips can help and these improved his writing by 50%. I love the step down in support with the different types. Teacher noticed too and is also thrilled.”

There are certainly lots of kids who benefit from using a pencil grip. Here are two examples of kids who have found pencil grips to help with pencil grasp and handwriting. Real Review: “I’ve fought my daughter to write correctly since kindergarten. She’s now in 7th grade and is willing to try because of these.”Why We Like It: Older kids who like the feel of weighted pencils will appreciate this weighted pen. The wider barrel makes it easier to hold, too. Moderately comfy, stays put, relatively easy to install but pain to remove, fits the Apple Pencil (2nd gen) perfectly A pencil grip is a small foam, silicon or moulded plastic attachment to a pencil to help a child (or adult) to have a functional grasp of the pencil. There are several on the market and one size does NOT fit all. That said, this pen is a ballpoint pen instead of a gel pen, so the ink is not quite as durable and can bleed through some papers. But, if you have particularly painful joints, this may be a better option than the Dr. Grip Limited Refillable & Retractable Gel Ink Rolling Ball Pen, as gel ink requires slightly more pressure to use. Once you find a pencil that suits your hand, it’s easy to customize how it writes. Mechanical pencils can write with leads of all hardnesses, or even with colored leads. Our guide to the Best Mechanical Pencil Leads can walk you through the nitty gritty. If you want to write with light pressure and still leave a dark mark, you should look for a soft lead. But if you’re left-handed, or if you know your notes will experience rough handling, get a mid-hardness lead that’s less susceptible to smearing.
