About this deal

There’s a letter on the floor covered with blood next to a heart-shaped box of chocolates. The note says: ‘My beautiful darling, I’m sorry, please forgive me.’ a psychopath is a cat among mice. You can teach the cat to act like the mouse, and the cat may learn how to act like the mouse and live among them, but it will always be a cat Robinson, Nathan J. (31 August 2022). "J.K. Rowling's New Novel Shows Why Having an Editor is Important". Current Affairs . Retrieved 31 August 2022. You want me to say something? Okay. Sometimes I think I am what you made me. And sometimes I don’t know who I am at all. And either way I’m not happy.”

The book began well, and we got a pretty good viewing of the murder in progress and how psychotic the killer actually is. The murder was pretty gruesome, although she took efforts for the man to not feel the pain while life ebbed out of him. When she left the Teddy Bear in his hotel room, I was intrigued. I thought we had a good premise for an amazing plot. Why do people end up behaving the way they do - is it nature, or is it nurture? Do people turn out to be good or evil because of their upbringing and environment or it in their innate character to be either one. Khraen struggles with the moral implications of whatever memories he has. He is not able to comprehend how he turned out to be the way he remembers and is repelled by his actions in his memories. But then, the more people treat him like an outcast, the more anger and resentment he starts to feel. The question remains - knowing what little he does, will he continue down the path which will make him like his memories or does he have the freedom and choice to be something else in a cruel world. I found this aspect of the story fascinating. Michael Fletcher portrays this brilliantly. We can see how easy it is for someone to start down the slippery slope where violence justifies violence and evil begets evil. Even though Khraen tries hard to be decent, the environment and the action of the system & people makes him lash out. I could go on forever but since you've already read longer than you intended I'll close with this last one.

I was also motivated by Chapter 6: “The magical power of endurance” Again, nothing new in self help, but always a good reminder especially when the going gets tough. How to endure? just keep enduring! “ Greatness is knowing how to suffer the insufferable and endure the unendurable” Ms Chu also suggests that “ as long as we are fighting the battle courageously the magic unseen hand of the divine is there to aid. Good to remember that! Fletch has introduced a dark, massive, and intriguing world that spans millennia. It toys with necromancy, human sacrifice, world-domination, and soul-cannibalism. Two years ago Detective Dan Riley lost his girlfriend and unborn child in a terrible accident, he’s still mourning the loss but trying to also move on. He’s called to the scene of an apparent suicide but he’s not convinced all is as it seems and his instincts are telling him to dig deeper. For a truly spiritual individual, the path of spirituality is like walking on a razor's edge; it is a diligent pursuit of one's perfection. However, for others, the pursuit of spirituality is merely a vague notion; it actually is a pretext, an excuse to practice inertia and avoidance of life's challenges. This really reminded me of books by Mark Lawrence and I certainly think if you've enjoyed his grimdark stories with Jorg then you'll probably enjoy this too. I did see some of the twists coming, but that didn't lessen my enjoyment at all and I found the character easy to engage with even though they do some dispicable things. I enjoyed the journey of discovery, even when it was a dark one.

Anyway, on to the story within this first installment of the series… The book is one that alternates the point of view between the killer in the story and our Detective Dan Riley. What is noticeable right away is this one goes for being different in the fact the killer is a female serial killer so that immediately had my attention and pulled me into the story. Her murders can be a bit on the graphic side and there is also a bit of animal cruelty so just a warning on both of those counts. I can't believe you're over. Please let me be delirious. Please let me high and when the effect of it blows over I'll still have more of you to read. That night I dreamed of a strange hell where demons were immaterial spirits that could be bound to steel and iron. They thirsted for death, fed off the essence of the living as it fled the dying body.

Demonology and its myriad practices in particular open up an engaging moral debate about the price of societal efficiency and progress, about crime and punishment, and the horrific cost of power. This practice forces Khraen to face certain aspects of himself, facets which are appalling and frightening for anyone to come to grips with – woven here with great skill by Fletcher. Excellent book. Recommended for people pleasers, those who feel small or insecure, or have trouble with boundaries. I love the way this book combines spirituality with the practical, survival-based realities of life. I promise it won't turn you into a narcissist. I read it while trying to develop a healthier ego and stronger sense of self; I had issues with boundaries and always felt guilty for not pleasing others. I struggled to feel any genuine empowerment and was so tired of feeling threatened by the mere thought of disappointing someone. Even when I did what others desired, it never seemed like enough. People will naturally demand more of you until you step up for yourself and give them an unwavering "No." How do I even begin with this review? Alright. I have to chill or else my words would not make any sense to you guys. 3,2,1… Go. I read a lot. Some books I like, some books I don't, and some books I really like, but this isn't even one of those. This book, along with the rest of the trilogy, is the kind of book that stays with you even after you've finished it, the kind you keep thinking about and you can't quite shake off, as if it somehow crawled under your skin and you can't get rid of it. I feel like Cassel is still here with me, watching the screen over my shoulder while breathing quietly. Commands were sent out and the demonic host, bound in servitude to the demonologists, had no choice but to obey.
