Compiled By [File Compiling, At Battery Studios], Transferred By [Transfers, At Battery Studios] – Vic Anesini The final versions are a Hollywood story, in comparison to the impossibility of shielding himself from real life that Dylan is actually experiencing. And only truly communicated in his earlier versions. Disc Five – Bonus Disc (Previously Released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs: Rar e and Unreleased 1989–2006)

What was Bob Dylan getting at when he lifted the phrase for his 1997 Grammy Award-winning album? Critics and fans alike immediately seized on the notion of the record as some kind of dark farewell from an artist in the September of his years. Indeed, the album was filled with musings on lost love, mortality, hopelessness, and despair. But there was more to Time Out of Mind lurking under the surface. If it was intended as a farewell, it failed miserably; it ended up inaugurating a golden era that saw it followed by such powerful albums as Love and Theft and Modern Times. The latest chapter in Columbia/Legacy’s highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series takes a fresh look at Time Out of Mind, Dylan’s mid-career masterpiece, celebrating the album and its enduring impact 25 years after its original release on September 30, 1997. Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions featuring Dylan (vocals, guitar, and piano), Daniel Lanois (guitar and organ), Tony Garnier (bass) and Tony Mangurian (drums and percussion) through incandescent live renditions (also previously unreleased) showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. Creative sparks flew. Dylan had been educating Lanois with old blues records. The blues has always been an anchor for Bob's songwriting; of the 11 songs on Time Out of Mind, four are classic 12-bar blues and two others resemble vamp blues with refrains. Lanois, a successful, widely admired record producer with distinctive ideas about sound and music, played a key role in forming the soundscape for Time Out of Mind: dark, mournful, spacey, with lots of reverb and echo. In hindsight, some people who write about the music are piling on. But I've got to admire the chutzpah of a guy who could stand up to Bob Dylan creatively; not easily done, I wouldn't think. Disc One of Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17premieres 2022 mixes, by Michael H. Brauer at Brauer Sound Studios, of the eleven original recordings on Time Out of Mind. In his liner notes for the set, Steven Hyden writes, “The album itself has been remixed to sound more like how the songs came across when the musicians originally played them in the room, without the effects and processing that Lanois applied later. It’s not meant to replace the Time Out of Mindthat won all of those Grammys a quarter-century ago; it’s a reimagining, an alternate view of a great work of art. If the original album remains mythic and enigmatic, this Time Out of Mindputs you in close proximity to the players.” The Time Out of Mind(2022 Remix) disc will be available in immersive audio, a first for a Bob Dylan recording.

November 17, 2022-New York, NY-Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 on Friday, January 27. Broadly speaking, there's no master plan when it comes to plotting out future archival Dylan releases. "What happens is we start listening to tapes," says the source. "We see what gets us excited. Once you get excited you can start digging, which is what happened with the gospel collection. We'll only stop doing them once we stop finding things that excites us." (September 2018)Truly unmissable. The original versions of what is now, for me, since listening to them, Dylan's best album.
