About this deal

If you’re a new parent, it might be fun to make one for your child so they can look at it later and have some info on what happened in the first few years of their life. The boxes can also be a reminder that life is forgiving. No matter what happens each week, you get a new fresh box to work with the next week. It makes me want to skip the New Year’s Resolutions—they never work anyway—and focus on making New Week’s Resolutions every Sunday night. Each blank box is an opportunity to crush the week—a good thing to remember. Short of having a therapist, one of the best ways to improve yourself is through a combination of mindfulness and self-reflection. These can be difficult habits to maintain, let alone start though. Tim’s Life Calendar offers an easy way to start the practice of self-reflection with something that doesn’t take more than a minute or two each week. Sometimes life seems really short, and other times it seems impossibly long. But this chart helps to emphasize that it’s most certainly finite. Those are your weeks and they’re all you’ve got.

I was curious as to where this idea came from. On 5th December 2012 Craig Weller wrote about a very basic life calendar that he was using where he was filling in the ‘week’ boxes in what is a simple printed 52×80 grid. He calls it a ‘Memento Mori’ chart – it means ‘remember you will die’. Highlight the weeks in the past in different colors to segment them into “life chapters”—i.e. High School, College, Job 1, Job 2, New City, Engagement, Marriage, etc., or maybe a whole other conception of what a life chapter means to you. You can also mark special boxes where key turning points happened. Besides the purpose of encouraging regular reflection, we hope the calendar can help you feel more oriented in your life, help you set goals and hold yourself to them, and remind you to be proud of yourself for what you’ve accomplished and grateful for the diamonds in your spoon.Sometimes we find ourselves neither feeling happy nor working towards building a brighter future. We can find ourselves living day by day feeling depressed, frustrated or upset; whether be due to having the wrong career, relationship, self-discipline or some other debilitating condition.

Apple Calendar offers more than enough to handle the basics but if you want more customization or find yourself working on Windows or Linux devices in addition to your Mac, you might want to look elsewhere. There’s an online version that’s laid out similar to the desktop version, however the desktop version has some differences to the mobile and tablet versions, especially in terms of scheduling which takes a smarter but less customizable approach on Mac. The biggest downside to Lightning Calendar is that it features an older, dated user interface which lags far behind some of the more minimalist approaches employed by most of Lightning’s competitor apps. This could be perfect for those that like to keep things simple or for those with older machines that can’t be bogged down running multiple modern applications. Tim teaches us that we can either live our life by enjoying the present, (hoping not to succumb to instant gratification monkey) or work at the expense of our present selves to improve our future selves. For some people being able to visualise how much time has been spent, or how much time might be left may be a motivator to use their time wisely. One of the ways we end up in NeitherLand is by not thinking about things hard enough—so one of the most critical skills is continual reflection and self-awareness. Otherwise, you can fall into an unconscious rut and waste a bunch of precious diamonds.

Events can be structured so you see them by week or in a list with an agenda view. There's also a view that shows a map of all your events that have a location attached to them. Each row of weeks makes up one year. That’s how many weeks it takes to turn a newborn into a 90-year-old. Plot out goals for the future by making a mark on a future box and visually seeing exactly how many weeks you have to get there.
