About this deal

The big issue with MDF is the edges, these are more porous than the top/bottom of the board and need more attention. To get a really smooth non-porous finish on the edges you can use wood filler or MDF edging tape. If the edges aren’t going to be seen simply add an extra coat of sealer/primer and rub down. What Alternatives are There to Specialist MDF Primers and Sealers? Acrylic Primer Undercoat can be used both as a primer and full undercoat. Any of the Leyland finishes can be applied over the product, even solvent based gloss. Cheaper brands, such as those you would find in high street bargain stores, will have been mass-produced with lower grade materials which allow the low price tag. Though that may sound good for your bank account, you will soon discover you have a tape measure that slices your fingers, screwdrivers that don’t fit in the cross slot of a screw and a hammer grip that is slipping from the handle. Made from bonding together wood fibres with resin and wax, MDF is moisture resistant, but it's not water resistant. If too much water gets into the fibres of the board it will cause it to swell and effectively become useless and end up being thrown away. So it needs to be sealed before you start painting.

There are a variety of undercoat options available in the UK, with water-based and oil-based choices, and others designed around specific surfaces. Almost all undercoats will include primers, meaning that they can fully prepare a surface for painting. Oil-Based Undercoat Creates a textured semi-gloss finish. It is suitable for use on internal concrete, steel and wooden floors in light to medium traffic areas and can also be used outside to highlight walkways, car park spaces and other markings but is not suitable for use on large external areas.Leyland Trade Smart Matt emulsion is specially formulated to avoid brush and roller marks when painting interior walls and ceilings. This feature also applies to touching up damaged areas, avoiding the need to repaint the whole area again, ensuring a professional flat matt finish is achieved with every application.

Having tools with excellent durability is extremely important. Not only will it mean you will not have to spend out on replacement tools when they break prematurely, but because tougher tools will do a better job. Sometimes cheaper ones can appear to work great until wear and damage suddenly make them unusable, and you are left unable to complete your task. This will lead to an extended work period as you will have to go out and buy a replacement. If you use that tool as part of your profession, it could mean the difference between hitting your deadline or not. No matter what kind of job you have or how you’re using the equipment, make sure your tools can stand up to the task in the first place. Make sure you maintain your tools by performing regular maintenance tasks like grinding or sharpening. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions while you’re doing this.Alternatively, if your drywall is relatively smooth and the topcoat is going to be a flat paint, you can skip the primer and use two coats of high-quality self-priming water-based flat paint (see “Self-Priming Paints,” below). The heavy-bodied paint resins in self-priming paints seal the surface and fill imperfections (which are less visible in flat paint anyway). Screwfix has an excellent reputation and is arguably the best brand for trade tools in the UK. This is down to them supplying only top-quality tools at extremely reasonable prices. It’s obvious that the team at Screwfix are passionate about what they do – having friendly and helpful staff that range from online assistants to instore staff. If you are unsure or need any advice on your DIY or trade job, they are more than happy to answer your questions. Note: On properly prepared walls, a high-quality primer can double the life of your exterior paint job.

Like new drywall mud, wall patches absorb paint differently than the rest of the wall (see photo below). Note: Even without a drastic color change, tinting your primer gray will help enhance the color of most dark-colored interior paints and improve a primer’s “hide” (how well it covers the imperfections and color of your wall surface). Intended for use with emulsion paints, water-based undercoats are vital in many cases for a smooth finish. Most of the options within the UK will also function as a primer, effectively offering protection for the underlying material and an adhesive surface for painting in a single coat. Acrylic Primer Undercoat Cheap drill bits do not cut well when they are brand new and don’t cut cleanly either. It will make the job slower and more difficult. It can be challenging to identify if a cheap drill bit is doing a good job because they can work great on lighter materials. Once you go to use it on the heavier stuff, however, you will run into an array of issues that will frustrate you. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Pro tip: Preparation is the key to a long-lasting exterior paint job. If it’s not done correctly, the surface will peel again within a year or two.
