About this deal

snipped) the lens performed significantly better than a previously tested similar Samyang optic for E mount. They couldn't be the same rating, but in any event even changing that figure wouldn't change the overall result. The central sharpness (actually resolution of course) is very high, which does eclipse the edges somewhat as a result. However, the edges are still very good and that still means a very good result. Images will be sharp edge to edge. There is no shake reduction, just as there are no additional controls on the lens. Everything is handled by the camera body. As such, the handling of the lens is very straightforward - focus, compose and shoot. The lens becomes an extension of the eye and there is little else to distract from that creative process. This could well, therefore, appeal to street photographers looking to get right into the action, even becoming a part of the ebb and flow as opposed to being a simple viewer from a distance. When I once again got a Fujifilm interchangeable-lens camera, I regularly attached the Rokinon lens to it. However, as time went on, I used the lens less-and-less. It has nothing to do with the quality of the glass, which is quite good, especially considering how inexpensive this lens is. The reason why I employ the Rokinon 12mm f/2 lens less frequently now is because of the focal-length. The 18mm-full-frame-equivalent focal-length of this lens is just a little too wide for my current tastes. Still, it’s sometimes nice to go ultra-wide, and I’m glad that I have this lens for those occasions. The Samyang AF 12mm F2 X is not a macro lens, offering a maximum magnification of 0.09x, but it does provide a usefully close minimum focusing distance of 0.20m / 0.66ft. The following examples demonstrate just how close you can get to your subject. Bokeh

The Samyang AF 12mm F2 X lens utilises a linear AF motor that produces almost silent, smooth and snappy auto-focusing, making it well-suited to shooting both stills and video.

Fast f/2.0 aperture– the bright aperture of this lens makes it perfect for low light shooting and astrophotography. It is one of the fastest ultra-wide lens available for mirrorless systems to date (also available for other mounts).

Optical construction is 12 elements in 10 groups, including 1 Hybrid Aspherical, 1 Aspherical and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion). The diaphragm comprises 7 blades. Flare resistance is enhanced by the use of Samyang's well-proven UMC multi-layer coating techniques. With the Samyang AF 12mm F2 X lens set to its maximum aperture of f/2, there is obvious light fall-off in the corners, requiring you to stop down by at least 3 f-stops to completely prevent it. Distortion From the images I’ve shot, the lens does produce excellent contrast and colours. I’ve also not had a problem with reflection, even shooting into the sun, although at times I’ve needed to remove my UV filter. The Rokinon 12mm f/2 can turn an ordinary scene into something extraordinarily! The lens is both challenging and rewarding. If you want more dramatic pictures, this lens is an excellent place to start—just shove the glass right into the scene! It’s also an excellent option for astrophotography. Why I love this Rokinon lens is because it increases the drama of the picture, and can be extremely rewarding to use. And even though I use it less now, I’ve certainly got my money’s worth out of it! What I can tell you is that whatever is measured is measured, and we can't really say that any measurement "should be" lower or even higher, as the nature of a scientific measurement is we have to believe what we see. It's of course true that many scientists over the years have perhaps seen what they want to see to support a particular hypothesis, but that is an aspect of human nature and there are few absolutes. Imatest tell us that very high figures are entirely possible, and when measured they are what they are. Perhaps that supports the description "outstanding" in this case.

Nikon Nikkor Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR Review

Initially I thought I would miss stabilisation, but I haven’t. Most of the time I’ve been shooting with the camera on a tripod, so not having a stabilised lens hasn’t been an issue. At other times, the light has been good enough, or I’ve been able to increase the iso and reduce the aperture to create an acceptable shutter speed. Optical Quality of the Samyang 12mm For the first time in Samyang Optics history, the independent NCS(Nano Coating System) technology was used. It creates even lower reflection rate than the original UMC (Ultra Multi Coating) and higher contrast. Also, the light penetration rate is very high to minimize flare and ghost. Optical construction of Samyang 12mm F2.0 NCS CS features 12 elements in 10 groups – among lenses, there are 1 aspherical lens(AS), 1 hybrid aspherical lens (H-ASP) and 3 extra-low dispersion lenses(ED) to provide high image quality. H-ASP minimizes color aberration to realize exceptional image quality and high contrast for center and corner of the image even when its aperture is fully opened. ED lowers unnecessary light dispersion to drop color aberration effectively. With such optical construction, it has 0.2m of minimum focal length. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. It’s also important to add, that the focus ring has three metal bolts which allow precise tuning of focus ring position. This means you can calibrate infinity focus very easy – something I find beneficial in many Chinese lenses. Aperture control

Manual focus only– not really an issue for ultra-wide lenses, plus focus peaking makes it a non-issue except maybe for fast-paced shooting. It is an extra-wide-angle manual focus lens designed for APS-C crop sensor mirrorless cameras. With low distortion and wide angle, photographers who want wide-angle photos such as landscape and architectural images can create satisfactory images. F2.0 is very bright so it captures clear and vivid images even in relatively dark environment.

Comments

There are 6 aperture blades designed to be almost as a full circle when aperture is closed which expresses starlike ray clearly and beautifully in deep depth of field images. The frame of Samyang 12mm F2.0 NCS CS is compact and solid since it is made of high-strength aluminum alloy. Trustworthy images can be captured even under inferior environment. Also, petal-shaped lens hood to shelter lens from unnecessary light is provided. When I first looked at my images shot with this lens, I remember noticing just how much detailed it had resolved. The performance is clear, even in comparison to the excellent Fuji lenses. Lens Distortion Focussing on the Samyang 12mm is manual. If you’re used to autofocus lenses, it’s tempting to think this may be difficult, but it isn’t. In fact, you don’t even need to use manual focus camera features like the Focus Peaking. Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as blue or purple fringes along contrasty edges, were not really apparent in our test shots, only appearing in very high contrast areas. Vignetting As we reported a few days ago, Samyang US customer service told to a FR-reader that his Samyang 12mm f/2 should ship in January, hence it might take a bit longer in North America to ship.

Manual focusing is possible by selecting it on the camera body or full-time manual focus override is also possible when in AF mode. Something that did not occur when I first posted is the centre resolution seems to be too good to be true - for even the best possible lens on a 26 MP body.

Field curvature

You can read more about build quality and internal mechanics in my Pergear 12mm f/2 disassembly article. Image samples The lens is small and light, weighing in at just 213g without caps or hood. Add the hood and it tips the scales at 225g. It balances very nicely on the Fujifilm X-S10 and sits squarely and with stability on a flat surface, so it could be placed, for example, on a table or flat wall top for shake-free long exposures. Samyang does not guarantee the lens shall operate error-free with the cameras not included in the list below. In the AF 12mm F2 X lens, Samyang have employed an iris diaphragm with 7 rounded blades, which has resulted in quite appealing bokeh for what is after all an ultra-wide-angle lens. Tip. If the moving distance is long, the camera may shake, so please shoot at a focal length between 35 and 100mm.
