Chromatographia 83:149–157. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10337-019-03849-z Use a clean spoon or spatula to remove emollients from a pot or tub. This reduces the risk of infections from contaminated pots. Risk of slipping Notwithstanding the limitations of comparing different primary outcome variables utilised in other studies of rosacea, it is interesting to note the findings from placebo-controlled studies of topical metronidazole or azelaic acid, two of the more commonly used treatments for rosacea. 4–7 In studies of topical metronidazole, the relative risk of improvement with the physician's global evaluation of improvement was 1.95 (95% CI 1.5 to 2.6), and in studies of azelaic cream the relative risk of participant-assessed improvement was 1.52 (95% CI 1.3 to 1.8). 6 , 24 In our study, the relative risk of IGA-RSS improvement with Honevo was 2.0 (95%CI 1.1 to 3.7), and in the post hoc analysis the relative risk of resolution was 4.6 (95% CI 1.0 to 20.4). It is difficult to indirectly compare the results of these studies of two other active treatments against placebo with the study reported here, as the characteristics of the research participants may have been quite different and the outcome variable of global improvement may not correspond to that used in this study. Despite this, we have found sufficient evidence of efficacy, albeit with wide CIs, that a reasonable next stage is to conduct randomised controlled trials comparing Honevo with topical metronidazole or azelaic cream. In patients with eczema, use of moisturisers and emollients may be sufficient to control mild disease and eliminate symptoms; reduce severity of flare-ups; and reduce requirements for topical steroids. Components of moisturisers include emollients, occlusives, and humectants. Moisturisers may also contain other ingredients such as surfactants ( cleansers), fragrances, and preservatives. Specially formulated products may also report antimicrobial, anti-itch, and anti- inflammatory actions. Emollients AproDerm Gel is a highly moisturising gel, without the greasiness of an ointment, which actively draws and retains moisture within the skin and provides a protective barrier to help reduce dryness and irritation. It is also an effective pre-bathing emollient so can be applied to skin prior to bathing to prevent it from drying out even further, whilst protecting it from the irritant effects that can be caused by washing and bathing products such as soaps, shower gels and shampoos. AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream, a light, paraffin-free emollient which has all the benefits of colloidal oat including protecting and restoring the skin barrier, soothing the itch, irritation and redness associated with dry skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, as well as having humectant properties and maintaining the skin’s normal pH. As well as being a moisturiser it can also be used as an effective soap substitute, to prevent the skin from drying out further. It's especially important to regularly apply an emollient to your hands and face, as they're exposed to the elements more than any other part of your body. Anionic creams contain emulsifying agents that yield large anions and are therefore potentially incompatible with cationic drugs. An ion pair is likely to form between the anionic emulsifying agent and the cationic drug, and this can reduce either the efficacy of the emulsifying agent or the activity of the drug. Aqueous cream is a cream of this type. Cationic creams Very dry skin may benefit from a greasy, occlusive moisturiser applied every couple of hours, while slightly dry skin may only need a light moisturiser at night. Addition of divalent ions, including Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ (10 mM each) further aids in promoting phage stability during storage [ 12]. These cations interact with negatively charged moieties on the surface of phages, which helps with phage stabilization in aqueous buffered systems [ 13]. Even the chemical composition of water can impact phage stability in the liquid formulations. Although pure water with minimal contaminants is often perceived as the gold standard for microbiological laboratory work, a high level of purity does not necessarily correlate with phage stability in liquid formulations. In fact, the chemical composition of water may influence phage stability in liquid formulations. Governal and Gerba (1997) reported greater inactivation of phage MS2 in reverse osmosis water as compared with tap water [ 14]. Water free of contaminants is thought to have become a more aggressive solvent that has a higher chance of degrading phage genetic materials. Furthermore, ultrapure water can compromise phage bioactivity as a result of direct oxidation, causing capsid degradation, tail fragmentation, and release of phage DNA or RNA [ 14]. It was also observed that phages are less stable in tap water than distilled water, owing to halogenating agents in tap water inactivating the phages [ 15]. Conversely, ultrapure water may be required for human applications, including the preparation of products for intravenous delivery, thus adding a layer of complication to the development of liquid formulations.

Occlusives provide a layer of oil on the surface of the skin to slow water loss and thus increase the moisture content of the stratum corneum. Bath emollients are oils or emulsifiers designed to disperse in the bath, and are best used in conjunction with other moisturisers including leave-on products.

The most occlusive of these are called protectives or barriers and contain dimethicone or similar compounds. Anderson PC, Dinulos JG. Are the new moisturizers more effective?
