About this deal

The airport Accessibility team recognised that many of their passengers with hidden disabilities were often overlooked and that many struggled to communicate their needs or to receive appropriate support. You can also add equipment through the below online form, or by contacting our special assistance team. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower also known as the sunflower lanyard scheme came about in 2016 after staff at Gatwick Airport realised that there wasn’t enough awareness of hidden disabilities among staff or passengers at airports. Acts as a visual support at the airport, helping the individual to keep focused while moving through the airport. On World Autism Awareness Day in April 2019, British Airways were the first airline to receive an Autism Friendly Award from the National Autism Society, in recognition of its efforts to train staff in autism awareness.

For those interested in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network, please visit: https://disabilityhorizons. You will need to also carry a “fit to fly form” with you to show staff on the day of travel at the airport. We have partnered with SignVideo to offer a video relay service for British and Irish sign language users. These devices may be carried in the cabin of the aircraft without prior notification if the device fits in your cabin baggage. So, for those who aren’t familiar with the sunflower lanyard, here is a quick overview of what it is and how it works.Passengers with pre – existing medical conditions who need to carry medical equipment in addition to their checked/hand baggage allowance must contact our Special Assistance teamin advance. When it comes to flying, it is helpful to know what assistance might be available from the airline you have booked with. The team at Virgin Atlantic have developed their own hidden disability symbol, which you can download and slip inside your passport. However, if the device will be carried in addition to your baggage allowance you must obtain a medical baggage waiver letter by contacting our Special Assistance team. Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney are all designated Sunflower airports and Cairns, Canberra, Hobart and Perth plan to be soon.

Applications received less than 14 days ahead of the travel date will be processed as soon as possible, but receipt of wristbands/lanyards for these applications cannot be guaranteed in time for travel.

OCS (reduced mobility service provider) can if needed assist you in your journey throughout the airport, they offer additional assistance with travelling through the airport from arrival at the airport right through to boarding of the aircraft. The restraint must be provided by the passenger themselves and must be used as per the manufacturer's instructions (weight, age, installation) and it would be helpful for passengers to have the installation instructions available for reference on-board. The challenges facing ASD travellers may not seem as obvious to other passengers as those faced by people with a visible disability. Where a reduced mobility passenger is travelling with an accompanying adult, we will do our best to ensure the accompanying passenger is seated next to them.
