About this deal

The Second Sight 4k remastered Dog Soldiers blu ray uses the original film negative (that was thought to be lost) that Neil Marshall found. Leslie Felperin (16 October 2020). "Dog Soldiers review – gory larks with furry werewolves". The Guardian. Reviewing the 2020 rerelease the Guardian gave it 3 out of 5 and note that despite the limitations of the film the talent shown by Marshall in his debut feature that "You can easily draw a clear line through this to his later work". They conclude that "Dog Soldiers has aged pretty well." [24] Awards [ edit ]

If there’s one flaw with Dog Soldiers, it’s that Marshall’s editing is a bit too busy overall. The action scenes are sometimes excessively chaotic, with a confusing sense of screen direction. It’s still miles away from the completely incoherent visual anarchy of a Michael Bay film, but Marshall’s confidence in handling action scenes has improved considerably since he made his feature debut with this film. That’s a minor quibble, however, as Dog Soldiers is still a werewolf movie for the ages. It’s a fine example of how a talented director can take a clever concept and overcome the limitations of a minuscule budget, and it proves just how versatile that the werewolf genre really can be. The WCG and HDR (as Dolby Vision) gives life and vibrancy to the colours, while maintaining the natural hues and integrity of the original intent. Flesh tones are of the pale variety, greens are lush - that of vegetation and in the army camouflage - see the richness of the yellow of the Land Rover, the cool of the blue skies and how gorgeously gross the reds of the blood and guts are, while the oranges of the explosions are hot! When a group of foul-mouthed squaddies are out on training in the middle of nowhere, nobody could have guessed their opponents would turn out to be vicious werewolves. Trapped in a family home and surrounded by the hairy beasts, it’s not long before the group find themselves with a no-win situation they must survive, and even worse they may even miss the England vs Germany game.Production designer Simon Bowles created models of the house for Marshall to plan and structure where to set up cameras and where characters would run or climb onto the next set. [8] For the exterior set of the house, only the front portion was built early on and is the only part used in the film. [9] A Blu-ray edition (including a single-disc edition and a double-disc edition with a DVD copy) was released by First Look Studios on 5 May 2009, [27] available only in the U.S. and Canada.

Dog Soldiers was released on DVD in the U.S. in November 2002 by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. [26]Due to the low quality of the original Blu-ray transfer, Shout! Factory worked hand in hand with director Neil Marshall [28] [29] to create a brand-new Blu-ray transfer for Dog Soldiers in a release titled Dog Soldiers: Collector's Edition, [30] which was released on 23 June 2015. It was a two-disc set including a brand-new Blu-ray and a DVD copy with a new cover. This edition is only available in the U.S. ( Region A). However, the original negative wasn't located at the time of the making of this release, and Shout! Factory had to rely on two original cinema prints, whose visual qualities are limited. Two Still Galleries – Photos From The Film And Rare Photos From Production Designer Simon Bowles And Special Effects Artist Dave Bonneywell’s Archives In 2002, the film won the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film's Golden Raven, the festival's top award, as well as the audience prize, the Pegasus. a b c "Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat". (Section: Latest News) UpcomingHorrorMovies.com. 26 January 2005. Archived from the original on 15 March 2004 . Retrieved 26 July 2012. I absolutely love that new cover art, would be great if they did glow in the dark for the moon and title.Marshall wrote the first draft in 1996. [12] It took six years to refine the script and acquire financing. [13] Marshall wanted the focus to be on the soldiers, with the creatures being an enemy that happens to be werewolves. [14] Marshall wanted to avoid cliches about werewolf curses or "how awful it is to be a werewolf", which Marshall felt was a trope exhaustingly used in many werewolf films. [15] Filming [ edit ]

I'd say the UK DVD is actually reasonable from being based on the original 16mm negatives. The US blurays were based on cinema prints with the 2009 First Look Studios release being very rough while the 2015 Shout release was marginally better but screwed by changes to colour temperatures and brightness in many day for night shots. The defense by Neil Marshall about original colour just doesn't match what I (and others) saw in the cinema and which the UK DVD matches. Many will know Neil Marshall for The Descent, but for fans of the werewolf genre, he made his mark on them with Dog Soldiers. While An American Werewolf in London may be the very best of werewolf movies (in my opinion of course) Dog Soldiers came out of nowhere to become an instant classic. Sitting around the campfire telling each other scary stories, it is Pertwee’s character Sgt. Harry Wells who truly makes an impact on his men. Delivered in a way that draws it’s audience in and keeps their attention, it is perfect to set up a jump scare that comes at just the right time. The scare though does not lessen the impact of the story he tells, and many horror fans love that scene for how much of a masterclass it is, not only in acting but also Marshall’s direction.Shapiro, Marc (19 January 2004). "Producers talk 'Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat' ". Fangoria. Archived from the original on 13 February 2004. Neil Marshall stated in an audio commentary for Dog Soldiers, that the moment in the film when Megan cuts her hand on a shard of glass was meant to be a setup for a second sequel about werewolf DNA, which would complete a planned trilogy. However, he added that the planned sequels will "probably amount to nothing now." [43] See also [ edit ] The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image, in the widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio, using 10-bit video depth, High Dynamic Range (HDR), a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec for Dolby Vision and HDR10. An early poster of Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat was released with the tagline "Coming 2014" across the bottom on 23 March 2014. [41] D. Eric Allen announced that a prequel and another sequel are in the planning stages, and Fresh Meat would be released on 20 December 2014. [42] This date passed with no release and no additional updates on the film's status. I well remember Dog Soldiers, the debut feature from director Neil Marshall, causing a considerable buzz when first released in 2002 – it’s been a lot of fun revisiting it since Second Sight’s restoration arrived in the post.
