About this deal

As a result retail prices have risen, sometimes quite dramatically. That’s partly due to pricing policy by the distillery, but also because retail outlets realised they could ask higher prices for GlenDronach that was bottled in certain years — a regretful side-effect of this article. Current State of GlenDronach A stunning 27-year-old single malt Scotch from The GlenDronach, distilled in 1993 and matured in a single Pedro Ximénez puncheon before bottling in 2020 at a wholesome 51% ABV. Palate (20/25): Dark honey. Chocolate fudge. Fruit cake. Cinnamon. Very bold. Almost over the top. Treacle. Dtaes. Licorice. Lots and lots of tannins. Molasses. Overly sweet, far too big. It's not bad but it's just too loud. We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Distilled at GlenDronach in 1993, this Highland single malt Scotch was filled into a single Pedro Ximénez puncheon, where it remained for the next 26 years. Bottled in 2020 at a hearty 54% ABV.

To conclude the original article, I wrote “ Let’s just hope that in a couple of years, when they can finally release whiskies with accurate age statements, they are able to produce the same top quality as they do now.” That hope doesn’t seem to have come to fruition. Sure, some of the single cask releases are still top notch, but also priced pretty much out of everybody’s range. As far as the more affordable releases go: the latest Glendronach Cask Strength Batch #9 was underwhelming. Billy even wanted to add new expressions, which we did. I expect that the new generation of whiskies will be mostly NAS with fancy names, but we hope to be able to sustain a core range of top quality whiskies with age statements. Especially because we feel like that’s the way we can keep up the delicate and unique character of our distillery, whereas with NAS-whiskies the influence of the casks will weaken that character.” Keeping the philosophy alive Basil Hayden Malted Rye Whiskey Assessment - Tasty Bites Journey on Old Maysville Club Rye Whiskey Review for example, Glendronach 12 year – If it was made in April 15 of 1996 (right before closing), would be 13 year old on April 16, 2009. On the nose, the whisky is sweet with notes of creamy crepe brûlée, along with notes of dried apple and pear, raisins, a bit of fig and a hint of anise. There are spice notes of cinnamon and raw ginger and a vermouth-like character with just a hint of clove and nutmeg. Distinctive cooked cereal notes emerge as the whisky opens up.Pallet: muscular and dense, coffee Christmas cake, crystallised ginger rum again with ham, pepper coffee some wood and gentle herbal influence. With water regular ginger more mocha/coffee and ham. The finish is long and lingering with sweet dried fruit notes, a bit of milk chocolate and a persistent pepperiness. Nose: Initially i got this very spicy note, complimented by that sherried jammy sweetness, that i have come to love in my GlenDronachs.

Let’s just dive in immediately, shall we? There’s a causality between the mothballing of GlenDronach and the true age of their age statement whiskies. The distillery was closed from 1996 until 2001, and that gap of six years forces GlenDronach to use older whisky than necessary. Take a long hard look at the infographic below and see for yourself. Compared to other sherry matured Scotch whiskies, this is an extraordinary value. The Macallan 18 YO Sherry Oak, to which it is comparable, sells for almost double the price.

Entering the discussion, I couldn’t help but focus on my preconceptions about what this new chill-filtration process entailed. My pre-emptive questions were about why the decision had been made to filter the liquid, who had made that decision, what Brown-Forman was trying to achieve by incorporating such a drastic step, how much it even cost to run one of these machines, and what the impact on the liquid itself would be– a liquid that had built its reputation on natural presentation and incredible taste. Overall: If you couldn’t tell from the over-the-top language in the above notes, this is an incredible whisky. One of the best, literally, that I have ever had. It strikes all of the bells for me: Sweet and fruity sherry without being overly resinous or sulfurous. Decadently full flavor without excessive alcohol burn. Mountains of chocolate, to degrees I’ve never experienced in a whisky. It starts confidently, strides across the palate without faltering and finishes with elegance, retaining its integrity. A whole, full, round, complete whisky. It won’t be long now before the GlenDronach 21 Years Parliament will be made from whisky that was distilled after GlenDronach reopened in the early 2000s. It means that the release I’m reviewing today will be at least 25 years old, maybe even 26 years, since it was bottled in 2021. After all, the distillery was closed between 1996 and 2002, and that gap of six years forces GlenDronach to use older whisky than necessary. The GlenDronach distillery lies at the Dronach Burn in the Deveron area. The whisky distillery was founded in 1826, by a syndicate headed by James Allardes. Thanks to the fifth Duke of Gordon, distillation throughout the highlands was legalized in the early 19th century. It is said the duke encouraged the group to build GlenDronach. The distillery changed hands in 1852, to Walter Scott of Teaninich. Following his death, a group from Leith acquired the distillery. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.

Glendronach has, in recent years, been increasingly recognised for the exceptional quality and value of its single malts. Its history has seen the distillery burn down and founder James Allardice declare bankruptcy, followed by a scattering of ownerships before the brand’s current stewardship under the Brown-Forman Corporation.A 15 Revival bottled in April 2013 can be guaranteed to be made with whisky distilled no later than 1996, making it a guaranteed 16 year old, not 18. If the distillery was mothballed before April 1996 (and I can’t find any information about the exact date) then it would still only be a guaranteed 17 years old, not 18. Matured in a combination of the finest Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for a minimum of 21 years and bottled at 48% ABV, the ‘Parliament’ continues the great GlenDronach tradition of offering fruit-laden intensity in its single malts. This rich expression has been named ‘Parliament’ after the colony, or ‘parliament’, of rooks that have been nesting in the trees that overlook the GlenDronach distillery for almost 200 years.

An old, collectible bottling of 15 year old GlenDronach single malt, "100% matured in Sherry casks" as the label proudly proclaims. Handsome. As stated elsewhere, ths table and its accompanying calculations are inaccurate. Fact is that GlenDronach was mothballed in 1996 and reopened in May 2002, but it would be nice if the calculations had been properly verified. When I first tried I thought I had made a big mistake. Left it a few days and gave it a few hours with cork out. Can I tell these apart? Sure. But can I tell if one has been processed differently from the other? Of course not.Nose: Burnt toffee, figs, dark chocolate, plums, maraschino cherries, raisins and honey glazed ham with rum notes of molasses and Demerara sugar. Also a big note of Pedro Ximinez sherry with some savoury notes of ash (as in ashes) and cedar wood along with a hint of parsley. With water more Demerara sugar and ham are more pronounced along with regular toffee (not burnt) some leather and a hint of toast. Those words by Buchanan turned out to be pretty prophetic. Indeed, GlenDronach has become so popular that despite their best intentions, the distillery has had a very difficult time keeping up with demand. Even so much so that they had to discontinue the GlenDronach 15-years-old Revival in 2015, less than 18 months after the original publication date of this article.
