Unfortunately, working out how Emil’s abilities will affect their relationship is the least of their problems. Brighton shows some growth around checking his ego, but his dangerous, hurtful choices threaten his close bond with Emil. I like a lot of things about this book – I would read an entire novel about Emil’s job working at the alt-universe Museum of Natural History – but I think it suffers from trying to do too many things all at once.They have ups and downs as twins, but their loyalty shines and they aspire to make a positive difference.

Here, Silvera talks about the challenges of writing his first fantasy book, the importance of queer representation in this genre, and which literary character he’d want as his superhero sidekick. Infinity Son has leads who are people of color, queer, and from various class backgrounds, so the cast is realistic and relatable. I plot pretty extensively to begin with, but that’s especially true for this series because I want to make sure I’m setting myself up for success with the sequels. When they ask their mother, Ma, about it, she reveals a family secret—Emil isn’t Brighton’s biological brother. There are certain instances where Brighton comments on the amount of hits and views he could be getting from certain fight scenes between celestials, which prompts the reader to question his character.
