I think it works pretty well for Rap, Hip-Hop, R&B, Indie Pop, etc. which is what you’ll primarily be using it for should you decide to take the plunge. Mid-range The treble sizzle and brightness that many snobs complained about have been fixed for the most part, as it no longer sounds overly essy or bitey in most instances. The metal headband does adjust to accommodate a number of head sizes, which is nice, and there's also some mesh padding on the bridge to cushion your cranium. The 9600 mostly still provides the same great experience as the 9500, but it feels a bit more like a bass-oriented sound for sure.

The SHP9600, like its predecessor, is extremely efficient. At an impedance of 32ohms and a sensitivity of level 101dB/mw, I found myself being able to drive these with virtually everything I powered them with. Whether I listened to the SHP9600 directly plugged into my PC’s motherboard’s on-board audio or powered them with a discrete headphone amplifier like the JDS Labs Element II, I thought they sounded great and never felt like they showcased any of the issues I would find when underpowering a headphone; which makes them a great option for those don’t currently own a headphone amplifier. Build and Comfort It feels like Philips tried to make a product that would appeal to both audiophiles and consumers alike, and I think they did a pretty good job though I still prefer the 9500 at the end of the day.Vocals and instruments still stand out, sounding very lively, intimate, and engaging, but in my opinion, these mids aren’t as good as the 9500. After being very pleased with the SHP9600 for movies, I decided to plug them into my main headphone rig to evaluate their sound with music. While I am extremely pleased with these for movies, and I highly recommend them for that capacity, the focus of this review is mainly regarding music from my main headphone rig. I make a few comments here and there about their movie performance. I notice parts of the song that I haven't noticed before though granted, I came from my phone's integrated speakers since my 2 previous headphones broke. Aside from new details, existing elements of the song that I already know also takes up a new nature with more rhythm and detail. I think this was Philips’ answer to the 58X, but that headphone is much better ( read: better tuned) even despite its Soundstage not being quite as good as either the 9500 or 9600 – both of which are rather excellent.

The DragonFly Red is a bit more expensive, but I talk about why its DAC chip is superior to many others here. DON’T OVERTHINK IT!! The treble is a little more grainy and unrefined compared to both the Sennheiser HD 650 and Audeze LCD-2. Treble is more present than the LCD-2 and maybe about the same level as the HD 650. They provide sparkle when needed, but not nearly as elegantly as the HD 650 do. The treble is a little more blunt with a hint of metallic aftertaste. If I didn't have the LCD-2 or HD 650 within an arm's reach for comparison, I'd have no idea that the treble had any limitations. I wouldn't call their treble flawed. It's just a different rendering indicative of their price point. I found no hot spots or issues with sibilance. They aren't the last word in treble, but they are pretty darn good in their own regard. Hi all, I just got my hands on the SHP9600 and I noticed there aren't a lot of impressions out there. Obligatory "I'm no audiophile" lol but here are my impressions after about an hour of listening. If I look up or down and move my head, the 9600 does slide, so that’s something to keep in mind. Now for the moment that you’ve been anticipating. The 9500, while feeling like complete air, did tend to move around a bit more than I’d like, which was the trade-off.

The padding is a cloth material with memory foam on the inside, and while they can wear down over time, I feel like it happens much more gradually than with something like velour. Sound Still, I’d personally just buy a 9500 instead as I listen to it more than I do the 9600 even despite having loads of headphones here at the pad. Amplification This hallmark tradition in the line hasn’t changed, much to my delight and likely yours as well. Genre-wise, the obvious is apparent: I recently had my Audeze LCD-2F repaired by Audeze due to failed drivers. They are no longer "F" headphones, but I don't know exactly which drivers they put in there since they have had many revisions over the years. I never asked because I was playing with house money since they fixed them for free a year after the warranty expired. It sounds fuller and more impactful, while still mostly retaining all of that incredible micro-detail that the original 9500 provided in spades.

If I had to rate the bass quantity of these headphones with 1 being practically bass-less and 5 being sub-woofer level bass, I would rate it a 2.3. However, it's fairly controlled with a nice texture.The same rugged plastic has returned, and the headphone cups swivel in the same way as the original 9500, ensuring that you’re able to get a good fit on your noggin. I wouldn't say they are better than the K371. I think the K371 is probably better suited for more types of popular music than the SHP9600 due to having better bass, but if you're looking for a more technical representation, go for the SHP9600. Vocals actually still sound surprisingly present and accounted for, but the headphones overall are definitely not entirely “neutral.” Being that I bought the 9500 a while ago, I can’t actually remember if the clamp was as tight as the 9600’s straight out of the box. Some people with top-of-the-line gear may not notice a difference after purchasing an Amp/DAC, and others may.
