About this deal
Some books are easy to read as a stand alone, but found on this occasion that it wasn't so easy to pick up the story. Full details of your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations are available in the UK from your local Citizens' Advice Bureau or your Local Authority's Trading Standards Office. Celia married well and has the wealth, after all, to keep it in the family and she cannot bear to see it stand neglected. Don’t try to read it by itself, it’s too complicated a story and it needs the enrichment from the beginning.
Montefiore does a great job of including pieces of background from the previous novel to ensure an easy transition for the reader. The sweeping nature of the novel and the grandness in scale, makes it a wonderful romantic saga to get lost in.Once again the writing is lush and descriptive and pulls you right into the story almost as if you are there! So if how I described it may be something you'd like to try or do like; read without worrying you had to start with book one. The first book kept me rivited from first till last, and I expected the same thrill with the second one. There's nothing better than sinking into a novel and empathising with the characters as they journey through the novel, experiencing both ups and downs.
Kitty, Bridie and Celia, upon whom the story is largely based, all face life-changing decisions in one way or another, unsavoury characters rear their ugly heads and along with the revelation of long hidden secrets, this book embodies the great television drama serial it will one day surely become. It's a touch of Downton Abbey along with rural hard living families spanning a time period of 1925 to 1938 (book 2). I'm not saying any more as I don't want to spoil it or give anything away for readers of this fantastic, sweeping epic of a novel.
