About this deal

It has been reported that contractors have experienced difficulties when testing 30 mA RCDs having a 0.25 A residual operating current characteristic. These difficulties seem to stem from the devices being tested at a current of 150 mA, rather than the necessary 250 mA (0.25 A), based on the assumption that using a test current of 5 I Δn will always be sufficient to cause the device to operate within the required time (0.04 s). This is not the case. There is no longer a requirement to perform a test using a test current equal to or higher than five times the rated residual current. What is an alternating current test? However, clause 4.2 of BS EN 61557-63, the standard for RCD test instruments, specifies that ‘the measuring equipment shall be capable of indicating whether the fault voltage at the rated residual (operating) current of the protective device is less than or equal to the conventional touch voltage limit’.

Note 1: Completion of an electrical installation designed to the withdrawn standard can be subject to the contractual agreement between all parties involved. Existing installations that have been installed in accordance with earlier editions of the Regulations may not fully comply with Amendment 2 requirements. This does not necessarily mean that they are unsafe for continued use or require upgrading. However, work carried out on an existing installation will need to meet the requirements of Amendment 2 after 27th September 2022. Type AC RCDs are affected by residual DC components and can become desensitized or ‘blinded’ and may not operate within the required time or, in some instances, may not operate at all. Table 1 summarizes the various types of RCD referred in BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 and their resilience to DC components.an instruction notice, intended to provide information or instructions for users of the installation. Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations are covered by Section 712 which has been extensively revised and expanded. BS EN IEC 61557-6:2021 Electrical safety in low voltage distribution systems up to 1 000 V a.c. and 1 500 V d.c. Equipment for testing, measuring or monitoring of protective measures. Effectiveness of residual current devices (RCD) in TT, TN and IT system. There may be some equipment however that would show false readings at this test. It is therefore important that manufacturer’s instructions be consulted and if necessary the equipment disconnected during this 250 V DC test.

Neither BS EN 61008-1 nor BS EN 61009-1 requires an indication of the operating characteristic to be displayed or visible when the device is installed. It may be necessary therefore to refer to manufacturer’s data to determine this information. To simplify the specification of signs and notices in BS 7671, Regulation 514.9.2 is proposed. This proposed Regulation states: BS EN 61008-1: 2012+A12: 2017. Residual current operated circuit-breakers without integral overcurrent protection for household and similar uses (RCCBs). Whilst BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 doesn’t require other types of RCD testing, however additional tests are not precluded and may be useful for fault finding purposes, these tests could include: Where an RCD is installed to provide additional protection, Regulation 643.8 requires that it should be:

It is important tobecome familiar with the changes.

With the increase of new technologies being introduced and more widely used, these devices are becoming more vitality important to provide additional protection against fire. David Garrett, Product Management Manager at Deta, says “This is a reminder that the regulations affecting consumer units become mandatory on 28th September, and that all designers, developers and installers should be mindful that they need to be compliant from this date. Deta can assist in providing related information and product solutions to match your needs.” The verification of the effectiveness of the measures applied for additional protection is fulfilled by visual inspection and testing. Where RCDs are required for additional protection, the effectiveness of automatic disconnection of supply by RCD’s shall be verified using suitable test equipment according to BS EN 61557-6 (see Regulations 643.1) to confirm that the relevant requirements of Chapter 41 are met.
