About this deal

In this market, the Forerunner 35 is somewhat within its own category. It’s a very basic-looking device, but I find this quite agreeably understated – less is more, as they say. The square shape also sits nicely on the wrist, so it’s comfortable to wear. The front is taken up by a compact 23.5mm screen; this is only monochrome, but it’s sharp enough to clearly show your incoming messages. I was also over the moon to see interval training options on all of the exercises. You can easily set up a series of intervals before starting your workout, plus rest time – so you can create a well-coordinated HIIT workout right from your living room. The VO2-max readout is also a super handy feature for those wishing to develop their fitness, and at the end of the day, the sleep analysis feature breaks down deep and light sleep. I’ve compared nights where I’d slept poorly against nights where I’d slept well, and the watch certainly seems to tell the difference.

Your new band should come with pins of its own. Use those and keep the old ones attached to the other bands. Simply insert the new strap into the lug and use the provided tools to screw in the screws at either end. While some runners might feel limited by that list, I actually see it as a positive. How many people actually know how to interpret variables like blood oxygen saturation or recovery estimates, both of which are rough (and questionable) estimates to begin with? I don’t, so I wouldn’t even notice the void. The GPS is a little weak If today is the day to give your Garmin Forerunner 35 a full on style blast, then one of our Silicone Grey Garmin Forerunner 35 Straps could just be the number one way to do this. All of this information can be reviewed in the Garmin Connect app, for both Android and iOS. Data is automatically transferred from the watch at regular intervals, or you can trigger an upload manually for instant analysis.

A running favorite, the 235 uses the screw-in watch bands, which means getting a screwdriver to remove the screws in the bands to remove the bar and fit in a new band. If you’re on the hunt for a flashy smartwatch that caters to a wide array of activities, has a high-res, full-color screen, and can measure nearly any variable you can think of (plus plenty you never knew existed), the Garmin Forerunner 35 is probably not for you. The Forerunner 35 also gives you a handy cadence readout, and even learns from your running style to give more accurate results when you’re on the treadmill or otherwise out of GPS coverage. I haven’t been able to test this scientifically, but I have noticed it filling the gaps with distance and speed data, so Garmin seems to be onto something.

The Venu is Garmin's smartwatch that's designed to straddle sporty and stylish looks and this band definitely veers towards the former. The 18mm option comes in 10 different colors and is available in large and small sizes. If you don't have a Venu, it'll also work with the Vivomove Luxe and Style, Forerunner 645, 245 and Vivomove 3.There’s not much in the way of smartwatch features, but notifications and messages came through promptly as soon as I received them on my phone. The only catch is that graphical characters all come up as a question marks – so you know when you’ve received a message containing emoji, but you can’t tell which ones. ⍰⍰⍰⍰ Whether that's the Garmin Fenix range, Vivoactive 4 or Venu 2 smartwatches, or running watches like the Forerunner 245 or 945, pretty much every Garmin watch has the ability to switch out straps.

As mentioned already, Garmin has tried to keep it consistent in terms of how you can remove bands from its watches. Though it can slightly differ between models. We've outlined how to do it for a few of the most popular models below: The days of the Garmin watches with bands you couldn't remove are firmly a thing of the past. If you want to simply get a replacement band, or give your Garmin a smarter look, it's much easier to do that. First, let’s clear up the type of person the Forerunner 35 is not going to thrill: a multisport athlete who constantly dabbles in different activities, who wants as many metrics about their exercise and recovery as possible, and who’s hoping to impress his or her friends and training partners with a high-tech, infinitely versatile watch. While the Forerunner 35 is a basic GPS watch by most standards, it actually does more than it seems at first glance. The information I receive while running is scant compared to the post-run reports found in the Garmin Connect app, which include graphs of my pace, heart rate, cadence, and elevation. Since I don’t want to be inundated with numbers while training, I appreciate that I can (but don’t have to) get more nuanced with the data later on. But if you’re a dedicated runner more interested in a simple interface, a comfortable, low-profile look, and a few key metrics — like pace, distance, and cadence — then the Forerunner 35 definitely deserves a spot on your shortlist.

The biggest tradeoff for the Forerunner 35’s small size is a less powerful GPS than many competitors. It takes longer to catch a signal than more robust GPS watches, and — more importantly — the real-time reports aren’t as consistent or accurate, either. Even when starting at the same trailhead and following the same route, my mile markers were slightly different from one day to the next, and the current pace was a little more sporadic than I’d expect (for example, I’d be running 9:00 pace one moment, and 6:55 the next). While certainly not ideal, I still trust that the averages across a run are roughly accurate, and for most runners, that’s good enough. It has a small but sufficient battery
