About this deal

A man jailed for stabbing a rising boxer star to death is mounting a legal bid to overturn his conviction. Detective Chief Inspector John McVea, who is leading the murder hunt, said: "Nobody would have known that Eamonn would have been coming out of the house to look for the pizza delivery, therefore we believe that the person was lying in wait for Eamonn as he would have come out of the house." Describing his client as a "hard-working family man", Mr Harvey said Koca was traumatised by the breakdown of his marriage - but continued seeing his three children on a daily basis. Magee grew up in the Ardoyne area of Belfast and was in and out of trouble as a youth. Magee came from a boxing obsessed family, at the age of twelve, Magee's mother enrolled him in the local boxing club. Magee stated that for his mother "boxing was as important as school". Magee's three older brothers were also boxers; two of them, Terry and Noel, having careers as professional boxers. His brother Noel was also a Commonwealth title champion.

I say how sorry I am and Magee squeezes my hand only to curse the pain in his broken finger, before wiping his eyes. We talk about his book and, of the title, he says: “The Lost Soul was beautiful. My mother called me a lost soul and she was right.” It really meant something to us, because of Eamonn and wee Eamonn – they're both boxers," she said. A BARMAN who pleaded guilty to murdering boxer Eamonn Magee Jr thought he was only making admissions to manslaughter, the Court of Appeal has heard.

It is largely irrelevant what emotion forges this connection – love, empathy, loathing, awe, whatever. All that matters is that enough people feel enough of something to want to watch an athlete in the boxing ring, or on the tennis court, or on the golf course and so on, over and over again. Magee achieved that, although to this day it is difficult to put my finger on exactly how he managed it. He has that aura particular to geniuses and cult figures that demands you pay attention to even the most insignificant moments of their existence. The sense of unpredictability that surrounds those who live their lives on a knife edge, coupled with Magee’s constant underlying dark and volatile character, combines to convert the routine or mundane into a potential spectacle. He holds a magnetism that appears to attract trouble and tragedy in equal measure, with fleeting flashes of glory occasionally interspersing the two. Gifted and flawed: two characteristics guaranteed to produce a compelling subject. The crafty southpaw has left it cautiously ajar so he can get a peek at me before making any definitive decision. I am heading home in a couple of weeks to watch the boxing bill McCullough is on anyway, so we choose the pre-fight weigh-in in the Waterfront Hall for our first physical encounter. I had felt calm when I took the call which told me about Magee’s latest scrap. My mood remained the same in the cab rumbling through the familiar streets of Belfast, passing the old Republican murals and the high Peace Walls which still separate Catholic and Protestant communities. I even felt OK when, after I rang the bell, two pit bulls next door leapt at the fence, barking fiercely. “They’re wee nippers,” their owner warned as he pulled the dogs away. I tried rehab and I said no, no, no! Not having TV was worse than no drink' Eamonn Magee In the final episode, police race to stop a bomb plot during Queen Elizabeth II’s historic visit to Ireland in 2011. The visit has gone down in history as a high-water mark in Anglo-Irish relations, during which the Queen astonished Irish dignitaries, politicians, journalists and the public alike, when she spoke in the Irish language at a state banquet in Dublin Castle. While these remarkable events unfolded, four senior Gardai were facing the biggest challenge of their careers. Orhan Koca (39) mistakenly believed the confession formed part of a deal to secure a 10-year prison sentence for the fatal stabbing in west Belfast, judges were told.

Yet it’s hard to feel serene now. Each time Magee’s phone interrupts us, with its Who Let The Dogs Out? ringtone, I scan his beaten-up face, wondering if it’s a call to tell him a paramilitary gunman is on his way. I don’t feel too hopeful at the prospect of Magee, in his dressing gown, and I talking our way out of trouble. The Court of Appeal was told on Thursday that he now hopes to have found a solicitor willing to take on his case. Who Let The Dogs Out? thumps again on cue. Magee shuts down his phone and I say it’s incredible he still won the national title a few months later. “I won but there was blood streaming down my leg from the gunshot wound.” However, Lord Justice McCloskey told him: "We do not have the power to do that. The only person who can get you a lawyer is you."
