Marshall and Zound first collaborated in 2010 in a deal that resulted in Marshall’s range of headphones and Bluetooth speakers. We pushed our selection of Marshall headphones through a range of music genres - from bass-heavy bruisers, riff-filled wonders and gentle acoustic pieces to get a proper feel for what they can deliver.
On-ears don’t tend to offer as many features as their over-ear cousins, but that doesn’t mean what features are present on the Major IV aren’t worthy of interest. It’s been ten years since Marshall released its first pair of headphones, the Marshall Major. Over the course of the decade, the Major series has dropped its 3.5mm cable in favour of a Bluetooth connection, but the basic premise remains unchanged: on-ear headphones created to reflect the renowned guitar amp manufacturer’s heritage. Major IV’s ear cushions are softer to the touch and more faithfully fit the shape of your ear. MULTI-DIRECTIONAL CONTROL KNOB One other feature is using the 3.5mm cable to plug into another set of headphones and share your music. The cable is long enough for it not to turn into a ‘Lady and the Tramp’ situation, but I can imagine it being awkward unless you’re both sitting down. It does work, however; although it seems to work best with Marshall headphones (I used it with the Monitor II A.N.C). Signal noise seems prevalent if you try with another brand. cap ensures it won’t move around. Spend less time looking for your charger in a mess of wires and more time listening to your music. You will receive a USB-C charging cable in the box. Wireless charging pad is not included. Major IV can be charged wirelessly, so it’s now easier than ever to charge and go. You can rest your headphones neatly on a charging pad, and matte silicone piping on the ear For one, the Major IV offer super stamina. IMPROVED ERGONOMIC DESIGN Wireless connectivity is fairly up to date with Bluetooth 5.0, and over testing the connection has been reliably solid. The only issue was walking through Waterloo train station, where the signal didn’t drop completely, but there was a sense of music phasing in and out as the connection tried to stabilise itself. SoundThe area where it’s most evident is with the ear-cups. Marshall says it’s used softer padding that moulds itself to the ear for increased comfort. Without the previous model to hand, I can’t speak to whether that’s a merited change – but, nevertheless, the Major IV headphones are very comfortable to wear. Comfort and battery life (where applicable) have also been taken into consideration. We like listening to expended periods of music and these two factors remain important to take on board. While some of the Marshall headphones in our list have an average battery life from a full charge, their out-of-doors battery usage can be enhanced with chargers. Another attractive feature is the ability to share your audio using the included 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable. Plug the cable into the Major IV, connect it to any pair of headphones with a 3.5mm port and whatever you’re listening to will be played through the other device as well. A section of the cable stretches so you don’t have to worry about pulling the headphones off your head if one of you moves, which is a nice touch. Opportunities to take advantage of such a feature may not present themselves too often – particularly at the moment – but it’s a thoughtful and useful inclusion nonetheless.
