About this deal

This is a nice tent, and a nice tent warrants a good, custom-cut footprint to protect it. Six Moon sells rectangular Tyvek and Polycro footprints in two sizes, but they’re not cut specifically to fit the irregular pentagon-shaped Lunar Solo. There’s also no way to stake the footprint down. Zippers Can be Hard to Use The Lunar Solo is a fantastic and reliable light-weight shelter at a surprisingly amenable price. Getting the pitching right can be challenging for some. There’s a zipper that connects the two half-front doors, which you close above the front guyline. Each door has a small webbing loop at its base which you can connect to a prusik knot that travels along the front guyline. This lets you tension the doors down or up, or connect one to the guyline and not the other. The canopy and floor of the Scout are constructed with 190T Polyester. Since this fabric is used in literally millions of tents, it is very cost effective. Incorporating Polyester fabric into the Scoutmakes it the most affordable ultralight tent on the market today. New for 2018 the Skyscape Scout now features new longer 3mm cord rear guy outs (not shown in photos) which provide improved interior height at the foot and increased ventilation at the rear. Also new is the addition of reflective guy outs all around.

A 2012 redesign raised the canopy up to 122 cm and offset the pole. The result was considerably more headroom. Extending the floor to 229 cm and making end walls vertical enhances sleeping for taller individuals. The slight reduction in floor space is more than compensated for by better weather handling. With more vertical walls, the Lunar Solo easily sheds wind and snow. Six Moon Designs was one of the first tent manufacturers to convert from silnylon to a 100% silicone-coated polyester material (silpoly). The Lunar Solo has been manufactured with silpoly since 2019. The Silpoly used by SMD has a hydrostatic head of 3,000mm, which means that the fabric can withstand a 3-meter column of water; 1,400mm is the minimum to be considered waterproof. We recommend tents be a minimum of 2,000mm. The pole is pitched at a slight angle so it doesn’t intrude into the living area. The top of your trekking pole fits into the tent peak, which also has a top vent (the Lunar Solo is Pacer Pole compatible, as shown.) The carbide tip of your pole fits into a grommet attached to the tent floor, providing a nice stable support that won’t slip at night. There’s a single guyline that runs from the peak to the ground and prevents the pole from falling. It’s really quite a strong setup. A hook connects the door to a prusik knot which slides up and down the guyline and is used to tension it.

Single Wall

The Skyscape Trekker is a large single-person shelter. The top of the canopy is offset to create more headroom. A short carbon crossbar at the top of the tent creates steeper angled sides for a roomy interior. As a result, the Skyscape Trekker feels roomier than larger shelters. The tent's interior is 8 1/2’ long, allowing tall hikers to stretch out fully without touching the sides of the tent. The canopy is 45” tall. Bathtub Floor / Floating Floor

There is a strong temptation to radically angle the bottom of the pole outward to stretch the floor smooth and produce the largest possible living space. Six Moons recommend that you not do this, and instead aim for merely a slight angle. This serves two purposes. First, it leaves the floor “floating” so that it can gather and move a bit to conform to the ground and resist abrasion. Second, and more importantly, it lifts the edges of the tent body off the ground enough to expose the mesh between the floor and the walls. This is the key to getting the best ventilation possible, and therefore minimizing moisture.

A Year with the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo

The Skyscape Trekker is very stormworthy. I have used the ultralight shelter in sustained 40 mph winds with higher gusts on the Pacific Crest Trail outside of Tehachapi and heavy rains in the mountains of New Mexico. The shelter’s bathtub floor forms perfectly with every pitch (no sagging corners). You need at least 6 stakes to pitch it plus additional 2 stakes for guidelines if you want to use them The key advantage of the tent to me is the weight vs price ratio vs durability. These are phenomenal and to my knowledge, it’s one of the best values, if not the best, at the market. 740g for a quality tent from a renowned US manufacturer that protects me from sandflies, mosquitos and light rain is exceptionally good. I’ve been using the tent here in New Zealand for a couple of years now and even if I think that it’s a great tent, when wind or rain is expected for my weekend adventures, I opt-in for another tent from my collection. Finally, this tent is downright bargain-basement-cheap, and it’s a great three-season tent for beginners and experts alike.
