About this deal

I'm currently sleeping on their mattress while also using their blanket. I had their body pillow when I was pregnant and it was quite useful, to be honest. I waited a little while to write this review. Believe me when I tell you the saying "happy wife happy life" is completely true! Gilroy hopes to learn more about the effects of space on a plant’s health this way. “The patterns will tell us whether the plant defense system is operating correctly or not,” he says. Inside each plant pillow is a growth media that includes controlled release fertilizer and a type of calcined clay used on baseball fields. This clay increases aeration and helps the growth of plants.

The Biological Research in Canisters (BRIC) is a facility used to study the effects of space on organisms small enough to grow in petri dishes, such as yeast and microbes. BRIC-LED is the latest version, which added light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to support biology such as plants, mosses, algae and cyanobacteria that need light to make their food. This pillow is also very cool which is another problem I usually have with other pillows. Another thing to note is that I and my husband are two very different sleepers and we both love this pillow. I highly recommend this pillow! Thank you.

Another set of six plant pillows, containing ‘Profusion’ Zinnia seeds could be activated in Veggie for the Expedition crew to grow and enjoy as they wait for word that the red romaine lettuce is safe to eat. If the lettuce is safe to eat, Massa said an additional set of plant pillows containing the romaine lettuce seeds will be activated in Veggie.

One of the plant experiment’s goals is to verify the Veggie hardware is working correctly. Another goal is to establish that the space lettuce is safe to eat.

Veggie will remain on the station permanently and could become a research platform for other top-growing plant experiments. ORBITEC developed Veggie through a Small Business Innovative Research Program. NASA and ORBITEC engineers and collaborators at Kennedy worked to get the unit’s hardware flight-certified for use on the space station. As humans explore space, we will want to bring plants for both aesthetic and practical reasons. We already know from our pioneering astronauts that fresh flowers and gardens on the International Space Station create a beautiful atmosphere and let us take a little piece of Earth with us on our journeys. They’re good for our psychological well-being on Earth and in space. They also will be critical for keeping astronauts healthy on long-duration missions. The farther and longer humans go away from Earth, the greater the need to be able to grow plants for food, atmosphere recycling and psychological benefits,” Massa said. “I think that plant systems will become important components of any long-duration exploration scenario.” Then I should mention the cooling of this pillow, it's just superb. Finding a pillow that kept me from sweating while sleeping on my side was very hard. some pillows even got the comfort right but never the cooling. Sure they all are cool at first then the cover material turns into a furnace as soon as I sleep on the pillow for more than 5 minutes. This one actually stays cool for the night, a feature I had no idea could be possible. I simply thought all pillows will eventually turn warm and need to be turned during the night. Dr. Norman Lewis is the principal investigator for the Arabidopsis Gravitational Response Omics ( Arabidopsis-GRO) consortium study, which will be the first study using APH. He and his collaborators are especially interested in what happens to plants in space at the gene, protein and metabolite level, and what changes occur and why.

Some patterns that arise are expected, like when the genes associated with gravity become altered. But two patterns that have caught Gilroy’s attention have to do with the plants’ immune system.

The Vegetable Production System, known as Veggie, is a space garden residing on the space station. Veggie’s purpose is to help NASA study plant growth in microgravity, while adding fresh food to the astronauts’ diet and enhancing happiness and well-being on the orbiting laboratory. The Veggie garden is about the size of a carry-on piece of luggage and typically holds six plants. Each plant grows in a “pillow” filled with a clay-based growth media and fertilizer. The pillows are important to help distribute water, nutrients and air in a healthy balance around the roots. Otherwise, the roots would either drown in water or be engulfed by air because of the way fluids in space tend to form bubbles. Dr. Gioia Massa is the NASA science team lead for Veggie. She sees Veggie and Veg-01 representing the initial steps toward the development of bioregenerative food production systems for the space station and long-duration exploration missions. The other pattern is certain genes associated with the immune system turn on and others switch off in space. Scientists suspect this may compromise that plants’ ability to fight off infections. I hope that the astronauts on the space station eventually will use the equipment to ‘experiment’ with their own seeds or projects,” said Nicole Dufour, who coordinated and led the testing of the flight hardware at Kennedy and wrote the crew procedures for the astronauts to use on space station. “Veggie is designed for crew interaction and to enjoy the plants as they are growing.” Veggie could be used as a modular plant chamber for a variety of plants that grow up rather than in the ground,” said Gerard Newsham, the Veggie payload support specialist with Jacobs Technology on the Test and Operations Support Contract. “This is just the beginning.”
