The original, which topped the charts along with the reworked Three Lions '98, has sold almost two million copies and has been streamed tens of millions of time. Immortalised by England's semi-final performance at home at Euro 96, the Three Lions anthem - and its iconic 'football's coming home' chorus - has serenaded most of the international footballs tournaments between then and now. But football fans are questioning the decision to release it again - with some suggesting it is so toe-curling and saccharin-sweet that it makes them want to vomit. Many suggested it was just Skinner and Baddiel cashing in by 'flogging Three Lions song to death'.
The video shows the comedy duo and Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie singing along, spliced alongside their younger selves from the original iconic video. The anthemic “three lions on a shirt” line has been replaced with a festive “three lions on a sleigh,” as Baddiel and Skinner top a Christmas tree with the coveted Jules Rimet trophy. Released today, the song changes the original lyrics from 1996 of '36 years of hurt' to '56', while the comedians also poke fun at the men's team with a reference to '20 weeks of hurt' in relation to the Lionesses' victorious Euro 2022 campaign over the summer.
