About this deal

We have a rather minimalistic unboxing for C200, but the unit has the right extras to make it fun. It comes with: Headphone and line output volume is independently stored in the memory so you can leave your headphones always plugged in. All testing was done with an SMSL HO100 and Earmen ST-Amp amplifier, combined with a Sennheiser HD560s and a HarmonicDyne Athena for headphone choices. Summary Damage due to user negligence, accidents, disassembly, waterlog, misuse, abuse, alterations or vandalism.

The truth is that the SMSL C200 did an excellent job with all kinds of music and was very competent with classical but it could do a little better with timbre realism and harmonic intensity. Starting with the front of C200, we have two headphone outputs, one in the 4.4mm format, and one in the 6.3mm Single Ended format. We also have a digital volume controller, and a tiny display to help you navigate and set the volume on C200. The DAC inside is an ES9038Q2M Chip, which is a pretty popular and well-known choice, while the AMP is composed of 4 OPA1612A Chips, providing a sonic output you might have heard in other desktop DAC/AMPs in the entry-level price range, such as FiiO K5 PRO. Starting with the design, we have many features that are rather rare in the audiophile world, especially at this price range. C200 is an interesting product, because it has both features, you’d typically expect to see on an interface designed for recording, mixing and mastering, and because it has a price point you just don’t typically see in audiophile products. So on to subjective opinion - bear in mind I don't consider myself an expert or audiophile and this is just my opinion for what it's worth. Up to now, I've been using a relatively ancient Marantz CD player (using it's internal DAC) with a similarly aged AV Receiver. By comparison, I like the sound of this - it seems to me to be pretty neutral, and very revealing, with a detailed sound. Through my amp (also SMSL now) and Monitor Audio Silver 1 speakers, high quality recordings - whether over USB, from my CD player (using the old Marantz as a transport), or from a phone using the LDAC codec, allow different instruments to be heard clearly, they seem to pop out at you in different parts of the room. Transient sounds like a sudden cymbal crash hit hard. Details I hadn't noticed before seem to now be noticeable. But it's always enjoyable to listen to. Harsher recordings can sound a little over the top and maybe even tiring - but can be reigned in with EQ if you're using a computer as a source. I don't think this is a fault of the DAC - it's just more revealing of what was there anyway, in my view. As far as adjustment goes, the different PCM filters available on the DAC are very subtle in their difference. Honestly, I could only really tell the difference between FL1 and "the others" (FL1 seems to filter out some of the top end more than the others). But they are there to experiment with if you like. Additionally to the digital inputs (USB, coaxial and optical) the unit also supports wireless Bluetooth 5.0 reception with the high resolution aptX HD and LDAC codecs.

The SMSL C200 is based on the ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M DAC chip. It appears like just one DAC chip is used, which would make the C200 incapable of “true” balanced audio – which would require two DACs to process the signal in parallel. On the other hand, though, amplification is managed by four OPA1612A chips, which are able to output an overall 2.6 W of power – quite a large amount for a device this small. SoundMeasuring 12 x 16.8 x 5.5 centimetres, we can say that the K7 is “compact” for an all-in-one device. Let’s take a closer look at what FiiO has changed and improved with the K7. It has good timing and it is not lean sounding but not too full bodied either, it mostly comes to headphone matching but don't expect it to fill a lean sounding headphone or surprise you with thundering impact.

SMSL C200 ES9038Q2M DAC Headphone Amp , OPA1612A*4 , TRS Balanced 4.4mm, 6.35mm Output, Bluetooth 5.0, DSD512 32Bit 768KHZ.The overall texture of the C200 is more dry than wet but in exchange you get excellent definition and fast transient response. SMSL C200 features a built-in discrete component linear power supply. There is no external AC adapter and provides clean power to the Digital and Analog circuits. Use It As A Dedicated DAC:-

This warranty extends only to personal use & does not extend to any product that has been used for commercial use, rental use, or use that is not intended. There are no warranties other than expressly set forth herein. The C200 is quite musical and engaging but you shouldn’t be expecting an organic and analog like sound signature with a very colorful tone palette. Coming at around two hundred dollars, SMSL C200 doesn’t bring anything new and exciting to the table. What it does offer is a good balance of features, sonic qualities, and value. So let’s take a closer look. Build and Features Mid-range is crystal clean with spacious allocation and excellent articulation, smooth enough but not warm. high-end dual op-amps OPA1612 and a large number of audio grade components are used while there is a built-in specially designed low-noise switching power supply and a discrete component linear power supply with multiple low-noise power supplies for the analog and digital circuits.

Design & Build

I won’t be dividing sound impression into dedicated headphone out and line-out because SMSL C200 exhibits the exact same sonic qualities across the board. A headphone amplifier has plenty of power to drive almost anything you can throw at it, so that will never be a limiting factor. So whatever you read here goes for all of its outs. Having that in mind, let’s start. If you have trouble using it with the optical cable, be sure to increase the DPLL value to at least 6-7. Should solve the audio issue.
