But, although the Sundaras are scalable, they really do sound remarkably pleasant even when under power. If I plug my K712s into my phone, they sound weak and thin and unpleasant. Recently, I tried running the Hifiman HE-5SE off my phone, and it sounded like dog crap. The Sundara, on the other hand, maintains its soundstage and its general majesty driven by my phone, even if I have to have my volume almost at max to get there.

Sundaras overall brighter headphones. Although I like their energy, they can get fatiguing. Relative to Sundaras, HD600 sound veiled but can be easily listened for longer sessions. HIFIMAN Sundara + iBasso DX220 (AMP7)– This is the DAP I think that sounds the best at this moment. I have a ton of flagship DAPs in my possession, and I really am fazed every single time I plug in DX220. In fact, I sometimes take a longer path when going somewhere, just so I can listen to a few more songs and just to hear it a bit more. The dynamics, this is exactly what caught me. Don’t get me wrong, I think that DX220 is excellent even with AMP1MKII, but it is nowhere near DX220 with AMP7, in this combination, the dynamics are simply, real. Now, the sound of this pairing is one of a dream, I could easily tell that the headphone in the pairing costs 1500 USD or more, if you blindfolded me and placed this pairing on my head, just so much dynamic and clarity, such a deep and impactful bass, and everything is so controlled and clear. And I haven’t even scratched the surface, DX220 can do MQA, Streaming, Tidal, and much more. This is the choice, if you have the money for it, DX220 can drive pretty much everything, and will do one of the best jobs out there with it. HiFiMAN Sundara vs HiFiMAN HE-560: the HE-560 are a more balanced version of the Sundara. Bass is more extended and a bit more present, but it stays out of the way in the same way. It’s a bit faster and more detailed, but it has less physical impact. Midrange is more balanced, though it still is slightly bright; it’s a bit more detailed. Treble is much less emphasised, so it is much less fatiguing than the Sundara’s while also being a bit more airy. In general, the HE-560 are more detailed and more neutral than the Sundara. They also offer a similarly wide soundstage, with some added depth, plus more accurate imaging and slightly better instrument separation.

The Sundara belong to the new course of HiFiMAN design: whereas the previous models were equipped with a fixed metallic frame with a moving headband, the new headphones use a fixed headband with the frame that extends. It’s a mix of the usual headband design, with the cups that extend out of it, and the suspended headband design. I was sceptical at first – I found the previous design to be as good as it gets – but after trying the Sundara I had to make up my mind. Not only is the design lighter and more appealing, but it’s also as functional and comfortable as before. Some people may find it even better. Fit: Very good, its pretty big for me but the clamp isn’t too weak/strong so it works well. If you have a very small head, it might be too big for you though. Amplifier: Topping A90, Headamp GSX Mini, and Speaker Amps (Roksan K3 Integrated with Cayin SP30s as Pre-amp) This should, to hear Hifiman tell it, allow the drivers to “ produce tremendously low distortion levels yet offer a highly dynamic response.” The distortion levels of the Sundara are indeed relatively low. It boasts the typical low impedance and low-ish sensitivity of a planar headphone, meaning it won’t be the easiest to drive, but more on that later.

Overall, Sundara has a sound that is at least amazing for their price range, reaching the golden levels for their price easily. Treble is similar in amount but much better in quality than on the Sundara than on the 560S. Much more detailed than the 560S. The Sundara’s sound is not entirely free of errors, and some listeners will be repelled by a tone they might consider too polite, too boring, or too effeminate. Build Quality: The build quality is fine. I am aware of QC issues of Hifiman that people talk about, but other than their cables, I have been fine with their build quality. The EQ Score is designed to MAXIMIZE the Score WHILE fitting the Harman target curve with a fixed complexity. Hiroyuki Sawano – Pretenders (01:18-01:47), a bit more quantity on the Phoenix, but tighter, faster and more textured on the Sundara. Detail retrieval: The detail retrieval for the Sundara is best-in-class at its price range. It's better than the HD 600, 650 and 660s, although the 600 and 650 are among my favorites in this price range. I think the Sundara trades blows with headphones in higher price ranges, in terms of detail retrieval.

Sundaras are mostly comfortable. They have a decent clamp force is going on which make them stay on the head safely unlike Edition XS. If you ask me clamp is a little too much but I’d rather have this clamp instead of having them fall when I tilt my head.
