Pulp are one of the most heavily mentioned names. They are another Britpop heavyweight, with well-known songs like Common People and Disco 2000, and they performed at Glastonbury in their heyday in 1995 and 1998. Curiously, ‘Over And Out’ is the title of a 2005 song by Foo Fighters – whose name has also been associated with The Churnups. Some fans online have unearthed a 2021 Seattle Times article in which it’s said that frontman Dave Grohl used to be in a band called ‘Churn’. During a new interview, the latter said the historic appearance was “the most wonderful way to sign off in England” before he retires from touring.Whether The Churnups' true identity will be officially revealed ahead of their show is yet to be seen but Emily Eavis suggested it might. Speaking to Radio 2 ahead of the Churnups performance, the festival organiser told presenter Zoe Ball: "It's coming soon". She said: “To be honest, I think there’s a lot of rumours that are circulating about The Churnups one of which is true. I don’t think I can completely confirm but it’s coming soon."
As the name "The Churnups" is plural, it could reasonably be expected that the act will feature multiple people in a band of some sort, as opposed to a solo artist. We have also only examined acts that are currently performing and could realistically appear at Glastonbury Festival this year taking into account tour schedules. Pulp is currently embarking on a UK reunion tour and has a gap in their schedule around the time of Glastonbury, which this year is from June 21 to 25. Many Glastonbury fans remarked that the set was longer than it usually is in that slot at an hour and 15 minutes. Fans were convinced Pulp would be returning to Glastonbury Festival this year when they announced a big reunion tour. The band are touring the UK throughout the summer, and have the whole Glastonbury week free.
Foo Fighters have previously played under a different name in 2014. They performed a tiny secret gig in front of 600 people as The Holy Sh*ts. Another band that has been heavily rumoured to be The Churnups are Blur. The Britpop legends are famous for '90s hits like Song 2 and Parklife, and they headlined Glastonbury Festival 2009. The name "The Churnups" also appears to indicate a mix of sorts. This could mean a mix of different artists. But nobody really knows
Blur's guitarist, Graham Coxon, is part of another band called Waeve. Shortly after the Glastonbury announcement of The Churnups, a Waeve gig in Ireland was rescheduled from Friday June 23 to Sunday June 25 due to "scheduling conflicts". This seems highly suspicious. Glastonbury Festival is famous for staging secret sets on smaller stages like the John Peel Stage and the Park Stage. So to put the Churnups on the main Pyramid Stage seems to indicate that the act is very popular and the festival is expecting a large audience to be interested in watching the show.This is certainly plausible. And it would make sense with the mystery band specifically given a new name, rather than just listed on the line-up as "TBA". Here's where it gets interesting - according to the Seattle Times, Dave Grohl was once part of a band called Churn in his teens. A band called Churn... a band turning up unexpectedly at Glastonbury... The Churnups !

It could be argued that you churn something up to make pulp. However, it could also be argued that to produce pulp you need more of a grinding, smashing or blending action. In addition, 2023 marks 25 years since Foo Fighters first performed at Glasto – on the same day and in the same slot as The Churnups are billed.Glastonbury Festival has not revealed any details about the mysterious band. However, many people are theorising that The Churnups are a massive act hiding behind a fake name. A mystery band will take to Glastonbury's famous Pyramid Stage on Friday night. Festival fans were sent into a frenzy trying to work out who it will be, but it seems we now have an answer. Blur are another name that has been mentioned. Damon Albarn and his band, who are set to play a headline show at Wembley in two weeks' time, are touring Europe this year. Some have speculated that The Churnups could be a nod to bassist Alex James' love of cheesemaking. Foo Fighters are playing in North America throughout June and July. However they do have a big gap in their tour schedule between June 18 and July 8, so there's plenty of time to get to Glastonbury Festival. Alex James, another member of Blur, is famous for making cheese. Some people have linked this cheesy business with the word churn - but churning isn't particularly linked with cheese-making, you churn milk to make butter.
