About this deal

ARIA Charts – Accreditations – 1999 Albums" (PDF). Australian Recording Industry Association . Retrieved 29 May 2013. With this the band’s fourth album, titling the album as Forth was sort of a play on words, as ‘forth’ means to venture out, to move forward, and not the number 4. It was also a strange title, as this album did not represent the band moving forward, but rather imploding. It’s also interesting to note that the band has formally disbanded or broken up three times by this point, with the breakup of the band already in process by the release of Forth, being the fourth formal breakup … though The Verve still claim that they are on extended holiday.

No album by The Verve has ever been the same, including their current release Forth, with Urban Hymn no doubt being the most different ... reflecting a more deeply rooted lyrical side, delivering a couple of great hits, introducing The Verve to the world, and leading to the solo career of Richard Ashcroft.

The group were signed by Hut Records in 1991 [13] and their first studio releases in 1992, " All in the Mind", " She's a Superstar", and " Gravity Grave" (along with the December 1992 EP Verve) saw the band become a critical success, making an impression with freeform guitar work by McCabe and unpredictable vocals by Ashcroft. Those first three singles reached the first spot in the UK Indie charts, and "She's a Superstar" entered the UK Top 75 Singles Chart. The band saw some support from these early days in the United States in some music scenes in big cities like New York connected with psychedelic music. Most people will be familiar with the seminal ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ and ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ (the latter a devastating paean to memories of Ashcroft’s dying father) but there is beauty and wonder everywhere – from ‘Sonnet’ and ‘Velvet Morning’ to cuts that should never be overlooked like ‘Lord I Guess I’ll Never Know’ and ‘Come On’. New Zealand album certifications – The Verve – Urban Hymns". Recorded Music NZ . Retrieved 26 June 2021. Death ceases to be the timeless observer as “I See Houses” fades out and Ashcroft sings “Murder, trouble and strife / Turn me into another guy / Don’t be late / Don’t be late / When I call / When I call / When I call you up.” Arresting without being distressing, it’s a gorgeous song all around. With “Valium Skies,” the Verve switches gears again. This a beautiful ballad, flowing in to fill the dramatic void created by the absence of “Noise Epic”. “Valium Skies” is also an anthem of sorts. Lush strings, layered vocals and plenty of interesting flourishes may put some listeners in mind of “Bittersweet Symphony”, but the only true similarities between the two lie in the grand scopes and heavenly heights of their respective soundscapes.

Ashcroft reunited with Jones and Salisbury just a few weeks after the break-up, but McCabe did not rejoin them. The new band hired former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, but he spent only a couple of days with the band. [22] The band then chose Simon Tong, a school friend credited with originally teaching Ashcroft and Jones to play guitar. The band made no live appearances in 1996, apart from a solo performance from Ashcroft supporting Oasis in New York; [23] the year was spent playing and recording songs for a new album. Gwee, Karen (25 June 2019). "Richard Ashcroft's manager reveals how the Rolling Stones returned the rights to the Verve's 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' ". NME . Retrieved 14 July 2022.

You get the impression that, for McCabe, life in the Verve has been one long battle with Ashcroft's ego. Rumours already abound that he will be leaving the band again before long. But it's McCabe's self-possessed musicianship that makes Forth worth hearing. He is consumed by the alchemist's belief that such base materials as guitars and amps can be transformed into gold. Sometimes he fails. But when he succeeds, it's sublime. Beaumont-Thomas, Ben (23 May 2019). "Bittersweet no more: Rolling Stones pass Verve royalties to Richard Ashcroft". The Guardian . Retrieved 14 July 2022.

Yet it is important to keep in mind that releases by The Verve are a culmination of the efforts of each member of the band, with Richard getting the lion share of attention simply because he’s the lead singer and stands as the flash point and spokesmen for the group. But without each other The Verve could never have become one of the best psychedelic bands in the world, doling out a mere four albums over the last twenty years.
