About this deal

The board game adaptation of the popular multiplayer survival-horror video game, in which one player’s killer stalks the others’ survivors as they attempt to restart a series of generators and escape, is in the works from Level 99 Games. The tabletop publisher has previously brought indie video game Shovel Knight and arcade fighter Street Fighter to its card fighting series Exceed. I don't know why we don't have more battle royale games in the tabletop space, why we haven't done that. Because it doesn't seem like such a hard genre to dig into. So yeah, so we're definitely looking at how we could capture the feel of some of those, and they might show up on a future announcement. Accessibility is a key aspect of the game," said lead designer D. Brad Talton Jr. "Dead by Daylight embodies a lot of detailed concepts but presents these very simply and intuitively. We worked hard to capture that aspect in the tabletop game as well, so that players of all skill levels can find something to enjoy." When we spoke previously about the Dead by Daylight board game, you mentioned that there was inspiration drawn from Scotland Yard. ( The classic hidden-movement board game.) And then also Battleship, which I was surprised to hear… Dead By Daylight: The Board Game is a one-versus-many game. Up to four players play as survivors trying to escape a location by powering four generators and finding an exit. Meanwhile, the evilest player at the table assumes the role of a supernatural killer aiming to sacrifice these survivors. Making sure no one gets out alive.

This system should be familiar to anyone who’s played BattleCon, a board game from the same designer. As that similarly has the same simple this-beats-that mechanism at its core. However, both games layer so much additional information on top of this simple decision, that it becomes not so simple. That was too good to pass up! The generators are the same way. The pistons slot into them to show your progress towards completing the generator. So we have a little bit of toy factor in the game, just enough to give it that classic board game feel - just enough that it feels like a game you could dig out of the attic. Survivors must use the movement cards at their disposal, along with their unique loadout of helpful perks and items collected from around each map, to outrun the killer - equipped with their own unique abilities - and avoid being sacrificed before they can escape. If they don't move, they can't interact. If you try to stay in your same space, you don't get to use the props in that space again,” Talton explained. “We want to keep everybody on the run all the time. That was something that's not technically mirrored in the video game, but it's something that makes for a really good board game experience.”For any other publisher, this wouldn’t be worth a mention. Coming from Level 99 Games though, it’s a surprise. As most of their board games are bright, colourful, and full of details. So in a two-player game, one person pilots all four different survivors at once. As you can imagine, this is as overwhelming as trying to drive all four screens in multiplayer Mario Kart.

There are a lot of genres that I want to do. But we're not alone in the video games-to-board games world anymore. There's some genres that are still really unrepresented, though. We only have like two, maybe three games that try to capture the first-person shooter genre. I feel like everybody has just said, "Oh, this is a video game, there's no way that we can bring that to the tabletop." And they've given up on it.We are really excited about the new characters, and especially the new original killer [Carmina Mora, The Artist] that's been released since then,” the designer said. “There's a ton of cool content coming out for Dead by Daylight. A Dead by Daylight board game is releasing in time for this Halloween, bringing the hugely popular multiplayer video game’s deadly hide-and-seek match to the tabletop. The campaign has two tiers of pledge reflecting the standard and collector's edition, the latter featuring over twice the content of the base game. The killers also reflect their unique abilities in the video game, from foes able to inhibit survivors’ movement to those able to throw survivors around the board. Six will be in the standard version of the game, with an additional ten in the Collector’s Edition - including all of the characters up to the All-Kill DLC released for Dead by Daylight last March. Much like the video game, the board game will see two to four players as Survivors working together to fix generators and thwart a Killer, played by another player.

Behind Dead by Daylight’s tabletop adaptation is Level 99 Games, the publisher known for its board games heavily inspired by classic video games, including fighting game series Exceed, retro-flavoured Pixel Tactics and fast-paced puzzle game Bullet. The Killers and Survivors are drawn from the original cast of the game and include the complete roster, up until the All-Kill DLC (March 2021). They're all represented through detailed miniatures, with the collector's edition also including miniature hooks and generators. A digital rendering of the game. Eurogamer.net is owned by Gamer Network Limited, a ReedPop company and subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions Limited. We actually started in April last year. Around the time that the All-Kill chapter came out for Dead by Daylight. That was the game that kind of became the talk of our board game nights. We have a team board game night, with all of our friends and most of the team from Level 99 Games. We were talking about what video games we were playing, and we were all talking about Dead by Daylight at that point. And so I said, "Well, everybody's into it, maybe I'll just make a board game. And, if it works out, maybe it'll actually be a Dead by Daylight board game. And if it doesn't, it's still a lot of fun with friends."

It's not something you want to do; it feels bad, and it's bad for the team,” Talton said. “So you definitely want to dodge the killer where you can.”

Managing secret information is really tough. And this is a very fast-paced game, where you expect to reveal and to hide, many, many times. What we discovered through many tests is that these moments of revealing your position and hiding your position were the key moments of the game. And we wanted to be doing that every single turn. We didn't want to have two or three turns where the killer just gropes around in the dark looking for you, or where you just search blindly for a generator in a labyrinth you don't understand. The new Dead by Daylight board game will take the original game's gameplay and bring it into the world of board games. It's a major crossover for the Horror title and will surely grow the game's overall popularity. Outside of the fact it’s got a colon in the middle of its title. You know this is a Level 99 Games production from the sheer amount of board game in the box.Survivors take their turns before the killer, so the killer will need to carefully plan out each move to get closer to victory, achieved through hooking enough survivors before the generators are completed. Sound familiar?
