About this deal

Modern comedians of a certain age still make fun of those other entertainers who ask “whatever happened to Spangles? Combining caramel and chocolate with cherries and coconut, Rowntree’s Cabana was one of the more exotic chocolate bars to launch in the 80s.

Any sweet that's been made into a challenge probably isn't going to taste that great – and these hot and sour sweets really didn't. When you look back at your teen and early adult years, you didn’t have to worry about kids, the school run and sugar content levels. They didn't need any extra fillings or flavours – the swirls somehow made this chocolate bar all the more delicious. Here on my baking blog I share my latest recipes, bread baking tips and chocolate making technigues. The next day, cut the coconut into bars about 8cm by 3cm, press dried cherries all the way along the top, and set them on a tray lined with greaseproof paper. My tongue thanked me for recreating this lovely snack although I have no idea what to do with the remaining 85% of it that remains untouched – what’s that?

Chic Bubble Gum came in a red wrapper around 1982 or so and was sold alongside Anglo Bubblys for a penny each. They were peppermint striped for a double hit of freshness and the best part was, they never left your breath smelling grim like some other treats on this list . These were the original minty chocolates that took the UK by storm when they dropped on our supermarket shelves in 2002.The Spira was undoubtedly the quintessential chocolate bar if you liked dipping them in your cup of tea. Cadbury's Spira chocolate bar was a bit like a Twirl but a lot more tasty (well I thought so anyway).

Chelsea Whoppers were a kind of chocolate sweet or, as was common in the 1970's, 'chocolate flavoured' (like Wagon Wheels). Surely the chewy mint version of the Opal Fruit, the amazing Pacer, with its green stripes, sold really well?

I let this settle before melting my last batch of choc (and burning myself a little 🙁 ) to form the top/bottom of the bar.

Think of this as the Cabana’s resurrection, only this time the shroud left behind was made of baking parchment. The Trio brand, now owned by United Biscuits and produced under the McVitie's name made a temporary comeback in 2016 when the bars went on sale for a limited amount of time. The Wispa brand’s answer to the Aero Mint was discontinued in 2003 alongside the equally tasty caramel and biscuit Bite. There might not have been enough among the chocolate, raisins and soft caramel to count as your five-a-day. Before Freddo came along, these were the cheap and cheerful chocolate bars with a caramel centre and Looney Tunes' Tazmanian Devil (Taz) engraved on them.My favourite bar was always the Cabana, lovely soft and sweet coconut with cherries mixed in surrounded by milk-chocolate – but they were discontinued in the nineties. The Banjo began life as a Kit Kat-style chocolate wafer bar that was only sold in London before reinventing itself as a nationwide product in the 1970s. The Mars Delight, perceived as a lighter version of the traditional Mars Bar, spent four years on the shelves but was discontinued in 2008.
