The third engine option is the plug-in hybrid P300e. Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre petrol engine that drives the front wheels while an electric motor drives the rears.Of the conventional engines, the P250 sounds like a diesel at idle, but smoothes off with a few more revs. The nine-speed automatic gearbox is pretty abruptthough, and is generally better paired with the additional pulling-power of the D200 because fewer gear changes are required to maintain speed. What about its prowess on the rough stuff? Well, the Defender’s ability to carry on when the going gets tough is impressive and easy to make the most of. The Terrain Response system makes it simple to set up the car for different conditions and, in its highest off-road suspension setting (ifair suspension is fitted), it powers over deep ruts and climbs up muddy hills with relative ease. All versions come with front and rear parking sensors plus a surround-view camera, although it should be said that the specific towing view isn’t that helpful because it doesn't cover the tow hitch. The Land Rover Defender 90 is up against otherpremium family SUVs including the Audi Q5and the BMW X3. In 110 and 130 form, it steps into Audi Q7, BMW X5, BMW X7 and Volvo XC90 territory. Buyers in search of the serious off-road prowess the Land Rover is famous for might also be considering the Jeep Wrangler or the Mercedes G-Class. Even if you go for a version with the relatively chunky 20in alloys (they're standard onDynamic HSE trim), ride comfort is far from a deal-breaker, but there is more fidget. The PHEV P300e is the least forgiving because of the added weight of its batteries, but is still not overly firm.

You also get a full roster of off-road systems, including Terrain Response to maximise traction, hill descent control to get you down slopes safely and low traction launch. That's on top of the infotainment, visibility and safety aids. Higher up the range, the Defender's price overlaps with the larger Audi Q7, the BMW X5 and theLand Rover Discovery. If you go for the V8 model or the PHEVin a top trim, you're potentially looking at a lot more than BMW X7 money. The Defender itself wasn’t included in the survey, but fingers crossed it’s breaking the mould and proving considerably more dependable than its stablemates. Realistically, though, be prepared for some form of reliability issue and the need to call on its three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.
The 110 has a more impressive boot, although we still managed to fit only seven carry-on suitcases below its load cover. Many rivals, including the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90, can swallow quite a few more. Mind you, the Defender does show up the Jeep Wrangler for luggage capacity.
