Her settings are all in heartland USA (Baltimore, mostly) and so, reading her books feels like you are watching afternoon drama series of American families, regardless of how dysfunctional or typical they are. Furthermore, the author incorporates conflict among the relationships to bring forth how Christopher’s presence can be troublesome. One had dozens of roses struggling in its tiny front yard, another an illuminated Madonna glowing night and day in the parlor window.Consequently, this has a toll on how each of these four characters’ cope with the lack of having a second provider for them. Since I finished DINNER AT THE HOMESICK RESTAURANT yesterday, I have started at least five very different reviews of the novel.

She marries a man with six kids of his own, while Ezra tries over and over to plan a nice family dinner which the Tulls can finish without someone getting their feelings hurt and leaving the table. Cody is a strong but competitive boy whose mean streaks grow meaner in an effort to hurt his earnest brother Ezra, who only wants to make others happy. Once again, Anne Tyler gives us several unforgettable characters: Pearl (with her failed marriage, her long-suffering children, and her determination to keep her family together), Cody, Jenny and Ezra, and then the grandchildren who round out this zany, unforgettable family. She states her difficulty raising him and coping with his bizarre behaviour, and thought leaving him with his dad would be best. By telegraphing the murders, Tartt wants us to be continually horrified at these kids—while inviting us to semi-enjoy their manneristic fetishes and refined tastes.

a marriage proposal; Cody Tull declaring his suspicion to his wife that his brother is the father of their son; and many more. It came about so suddenly: they were playing Monopoly on Cody's bed, the three of them, and Cody was winning as usual and offering Luke a loan to keep going. This was only my 2nd Anne Tyler novel but I can already tell she is going to become one of my favorite authors. Families are almost impossible to get out of, and therefore they make wonderful petri dishes for novelists. Anne Tyler now joins the ranks of John Boyne in the club I am now naming: "I came, I saw, I shrugged.Late in the novel, we even get a chapter from the point of view of one of the Tull siblings' children, and it's a fantastic chapter, full of cautionary stories about other dysfunctional families. Scarlatti contracts cancer; Jenny’s marriage fails; Jenny speaks to Josiah again at Ezra’s restaurant, and Pearl becomes enraged. And when Cody's teenage son Luke hitchhikes, on the crest of one of Cody's pristine rages, from the Virginia home to Ezra in Baltimore, he too is inundated with family miseries. Anne Tyler is a character creator, the ones you may not like, but you know they exist, they breathe, they live, they die.
